Artist Explores the Many Ways Shapes and Colors Interact with Each Other

Multi-disciplinary artist, Ellen Rutt, makes anything and everything, from paintings and murals to installations and wearable art. All created with a distinctive style that is bold, vibrant and graphic.

Mostly abstract, her art is an exploration of colors and shapes. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design, she has exhibited her work at and painted murals in Detroit, New York, Chicago, Canada, and France. And with a growing audience of more than 25 thousand followers on Instagram, the hype is real.

“I was struggling for a while right after college with anxiety and spread myself thin working on a lot of freelance projects I didn’t love just to make ends meet, so I reluctantly accepted a full-time position at an advertising agency,” she recalled in an interview with the Shinola blog. “I loved learning about advertising, but also found my passion pulling me in a different direction. That experience taught me how to find humor even in intense workplace environments and gave me the self discipline to structure my time more effectively.”

Nowadays, she’s hard at work as a full-time artist, in addition to working on several freelance projects. “Really, I just love any opportunity to make new work,” she admits. “And doing so in Detroit makes that special.”
