Let’s face it, social media can be overbearing. The oversharing and constant need for likes and shares can come at a cost. So it’s good to be reminded here and then why we turn to these applications in the first place: to enrich our relationships, rather than risk having them take over our lives and make us miserable.

Adam J. Kurtz might just be the cure to our problems. A semi Instagram therapist, he’s known for his dark but honest humor, sharing tidbits of advice for his huge following (on Instagram alone Kurtz has amassed some 310k fans). Outside of Instagram, he’s also the author of a book dedicated to life advice for creatives (though non-artists like us can also benefit from his sound advice). His planners are also quite a hit.

“Creativity is a huge, giant word,” admitted Kurtz in an interview with the Creative Independent. “I don’t think creativity is inherently good. I don’t think it’s inherently anything. Actually, I’m not even sure if creativity is the drive to make things, or if it’s the mechanism that allows us to make things. It’s so big, and the word means so many different things to different people.”

According to Kurtz, creativity is not a magical skill that you have or don’t have. In fact, everyone is creative: “I think creativity is one of the big, vague things that we all have that manifests itself in very different ways.”

It’s his positive (but realistic) outlook on life and creation that makes his social media pages a mecca for people who need a little break from an over-inspired hyper-ventilating feed.

“Sorry I forgot to post an inspirational quote,” reads a recent post of his. “I was busy feeling very depressed.”

To.keep.blooming is an uplifting Instagram account, filled with positive gifts that talk about mental health issues. The mind behind this great account is a 23-year-old called Addie, who is dealing with mental health issues herself, and wants to help other people with similar problems.

Addie told Bored Panda that she’s been dealing with mental health issues for about ten years now. In 2019, after many ups and downs, she decided to open this online diary on Instagram and talk about this problem. She creates interesting gifs to put a smile on people’s faces and to inspire them to never give up.

“We’ve been told for years now that social media isn’t good for our mental health, which can be true, of course. But this whole world of social media and Instagram is filled with endless content and personalities, and we GET to choose who we want and who we don’t want to follow”, the artist told Bored Panda, adding that we don’t have to avoid our phone altogether to feel better. Instead, we can choose to fill it with positive, uplifting, and inspiring content.

His owners, Nathanial Green and Elliot Green, say that Merlin is so well adjusted that they forget he actually can’t see. Adopted in 2017 at the Lynchburg Humane Society on their ‘Free Cat Friday,” Elliot Green admits that he was a bit worrisome of his condition at first.

“As a full-time student also working two jobs, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to provide Merlin with the attention he needed,” he explained in an interview with Bored Panda. “As soon as I got to hold him, I think it was pretty obvious that he was perfect.”

“Honestly, we forget that he has blind eyes,” he added. “When we first moved to our apartment, he definitely had trouble navigating, but he learns quickly and really knows how to own the space. His greatest recurring struggle is from our coffee table’s glass edges: Every now and then, he’ll jump or walk into it, but we think he’s learned. All he really cares about is where the food is and how far away it is from his dads.”

Just look at this cutie pie!

It’s hard not to let the drowsiness of wintertime get to you (especially this time of year), but author, blogger, and designer Dani DiPirro will give you the extra push you need to get up and get going. With a website titled Positively Present, DiPirro uses her online platform to promote positivity, awareness, and self-love – the ingredients needed to get over yourself.

Since launching her website in 2009, her brand has grown into a viral phenomenon, which includes a YouTube channel, an Instagram page, and online courses. Her tips and tips differ in size and shape, sometimes coming in the form of wholly fleshed books, other times resulting in a catchy mantra or meme.

“Someone once said, ‘If you realize how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.’ Positively Present is that quote come to life online,” reads DiPirro’s website. According to DiPirro, “living a ‘positively present’ life means staying in the moment while focusing on the positive in every situation, which can often be difficult when facing the pressures and challenges of everyday life (not to mention the particularly tough times of loss, stress, or heartache!).”

But her uplifting quotes might just be the thing that inspires you to love yourself a little. Here are some helpful reminders courtesy of her Instagram page:

Social media has become a beacon and haven for influencers who are looking to stake their claim as one of social media’s biggest celebrities. But, over the years, people have come to learn that everything in social media is either fake or staged.

That hasn’t stopped influencers from trying though, and why would they stop? Even if people know that they’re being lied to, they’re still willing to take the bait anyway.

That’s what makes style and beauty influencer, Rianne Meijer, unique.

Instead of sorting through multiple photos of herself and trying to find the perfect shot, Rianne isn’t actually afraid to share her unedited shots and put them side-by-side with the shots that most influencers would show the world proudly.

While you’d think that people would be turned off with this, they actually find it quite interesting, which is why she has 390k followers on Instagram.

Truly, nobody is perfect.

Make sure that you scroll down below to see more of Rianne’s side-by-side comparisons to know more about what goes on behind the scenes of the photos that your favourite social media influencers upload.

Julie Jones, known as Soulful Baker, was just a woman in her early 30s when she realized she doesn’t enjoy her office life at all and decided to change her life path. She figured out what she loves the most – feeding people – so she graduated from a catering college in Carlisle. Soon after that she found out that she’s pregnant, and that her mom is showing early signs of dementia.

She started an Instagram account in 2013, and with a little help from her friends figured out how to use hashtags. Soon enough, she had a small but fiercely supportive community of 100 people. Her mother’s condition wasn’t getting any better, so they began baking together as a form of therapy – just like when she was a child. She used Instagram to promote her creations, but also to talk and educate about Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Today she has 120k followers on Instagram. Food 52 regrammed her lemon tart photo which picked up 75.819 likes, and 27.445 on her profile. She wrote the succesful book The Soulful baker, where she shares her tips on making heavenly delicious baked goods. She never thought that she’d be cooking with Jamie Oliver in London one day – but she did!

Take a look at some of her gorgeous creations below!

We all could use a dose of positivity in our lives, let alone our Instagram feeds. Author and wellness consultant Alexandra Elle is here to do just that, posting daily reminders about self-care and healing your mind.

Living in the Washington, DC metro area with her husband and children, Elle admits that writing came into her life by way of therapy and the exploration of healing through journaling. Now, she passes it on, teaching workshops and retreats centered around assisting others in finding their voices through storytelling, poetry, and narrative writing rooted in truth without shame.

“I still feel vulnerable when I share my writing,” she admitted in an interview with Create & Cultivate. “It’s my heart’s work. I think vulnerability is good, so I lean into it. People relate to authenticity and I truly believe that being vulnerable helps amplify that.”

Indeed, people are relating to her. With more than 500 thousand followers on Instagram, several books to her name, as well as her own podcast, Elle has got her work cut out for her.

“The highlight of my career has been building a community near and far, in person and online,” she shared. “It blows my mind how writing, storying telling, and standing in comradery can shift the dynamics of sisterhood and self-love in such a positive way, time and time again.”

Notes on Going for It: When I self-published my first book 6 years ago, I did not expect my life to transform. I went from working a 9-5, to taking a risk by sharing my story, to quitting my toxic day job where I was undervalued, to speaking at a Ohio State University shortly after I resigned. . . I went on to self-publish a few more projects before being picked up by my first traditional publishing house who gave me a taste of what I wanted and didn’t. Being in this world has been such an eye opening experience. . . Earlier this year, I knew I wanted to shift in my career. I started working with an amazing literary agent who believed in me and helped me to find a new home for my work. Having @cincinn by my side is a game changer. My new books were pitched and went to auction for bidding (talk about feeling vulnerable). Despite being nervous about what was to come, I trusted the process. . . After having different (and amazing!) publishers to choose from I ended up signing a 2 book deal with @chroniclebooks. A publisher I’ve admired for years. My new editor @rachelhiles won my heart in so many ways, and I am so grateful to call Chronicle Books my new literary home! It’s been a long journey. . . This path has taught me so much about doing the hard thing, choosing myself, naming my worth as an artist, and going for it! Come 2020 you all will have a collection of essays & affirmations from me—followed by a journal to help YOU continue to do your soul-work. . . I share this all to say, you (too) can do your heart’s work. Very few folks believed in me when I started writing. Now my books will outlive me. My story and written work has become my legacy. Don’t be discouraged. Take your time, prepare, ask for help, and unfold to bloom into your passion! . . Thank you ALL for supporting me over the years. I am excited to bring new work to life for you. Be brave, and do the hard thing. You can do the work to get there! . . All my love, Alex

Notes on Boundaries: Recently I had to do my part in honoring the boundaries I put in place. So often we talk about others respecting and accepting a boundary, but more times than not, it falls on us to set the trend with honesty and clarity. Personal experience: I know someone who only reaches out when they want something. Their sporadic texts became a trend, laced with needs, wants, favors, and "quick question for ya" that rarely involved care or respect for my time, energy, and space. Despite me knowing this, I continued to answer, show up, and make time when I didn't want to. After a while, I stopped engaging all together, which wasn't a healthy choice, but I didn't want to hurt feelings or cause conflict. Not only that, my problem wasn't addressed or fixed because I decided that saying nothing would speak volumes. It didn't. The Lesson: Using avoidance and calling it a boundary is neither transparent or helpful. Speak up and communicate. . . When this person recently reached out, despite the distance I thought I created; I told them kindly and honestly that I didn't have the space or the desire to connect or talk. That the one-sidedness of our interactions don't work for me, and I would prefer to no longer keep in touch. It was uncomfortable, but if I kept crossing the boundary into nourishing draining relationships, the interactions would keep happening, and I would keep feeling how I felt with the other party not having a clue because of my lack of communication. We are all trying our best to navigate relationships and figure things out. It takes trial and error, effort, and practice to do this thing called life while human. As I grow, I am choosing to invest and place my energy in learning better communication skills, nurturing equally healthy and whole relationships, and finding a better balance with honoring my self boundaries. Community: Where are you placing and investing your time & energy?

The Swim Reaper is an Instagram account with the tagline “Swim dumb and you’re done” that has already gained nearly 1000,000 followers by offering an insanely funny insight into the daily life of a Reaper who patrols the beaches of New Zealand waiting for things to go wrong. You’d never think of it, but the account is actually a very clever effort by Water Safety New Zealand, intended to help prevent water-related deaths, especially among young men, who account for a third of all fatal incidents annually in New Zealand.

According to Jonty Mills, CEO of Water Safety New Zealand, most of the drownings are preventable, but it’s really hard to get people to do things by the rules, so they needed a new method of educating them about making smarter decisions around water. And that’s when The Swim Reaper was born.

In the pictures, The Swim Reaper can be often seen sitting in a lifeguard chair and watching over beachgoers on a beautiful sunny day, which is an unexpectedly hilarious sight but it also slips a chilling subconscious alert about the risks of open water. Sounds hilariously morbid? It is!

Check out The Swim Reaper’s adventures in the gallery below!

With 800 million users and counting, Instagram has become a key platform for painters, photographers, illustrators and other artists to showcase their work and gain a loyal following of fans and collectors, forever transforming the way we experience and consume art, and most say it’s for the better. So if you’re an art lover always looking for fresh visual inspiration, here are three of the best creators to follow on Instagram in 2019.

Frank Shepard Fairey

One of the most famous graphic artists and muralists alive, Shepard Fairy, started his career as a street artist. Since then, his incredibly large opus, concentrated on the colors black, white and red, has been used in screen-prints, illustrations, collages, sculptures, posters and murals.

Fan the Flames is about the unfortunate truth that unchecked capitalism and a livable planet will soon be incompatible. Capitalism is predicated on expanding consumption and profits without regard to environmental consequences (with the exception of a few conscientious companies). I’m not making an indictment of capitalism in its entirety, only making the point that safety checks need to exist to put the health of the many before the profits of a few. The function of government is to serve the needs of the people who elected it before the needs of corporations, however corporate donations and lobbyists corrupt democracy in the way that they shift government's priorities from the needs of the many to the desires of big corporations. Campaign finance reform would help to keep polluters and fossil fuel corporations from going unchecked. We all need to think about how we vote and how we consume with an eye on a very delicate future ecologically. If you have not read it, I’d strongly recommend Naomi Klein’s book “This Changes Everything”… the market does not solve all problems; most need to be solved by humans who understand ethical responsibility. Proceeds from this print will benefit @350org, but I’d also suggest checking out @representus. Thanks for caring! – Shepard⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ OBEY Fan the Flames. Screenprint on cream Speckletone paper. 24 x 36 inches. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 550. $90. Available Thursday, April 18th @ 10 AM PDT at store.obeygiant.com/collections/prints. Portion of proceeds will be donated to 350.org. Max order: 1 per customer/household. *Orders are not guaranteed as demand is high and inventory is limited.* Multiple orders will be refunded. International customers are responsible for import fees due upon delivery.⁣

Sarah Bahbah

Ever since introducing her signature style to the public, Sarah Bahbah has gained a massive following and earned collaborations with brands like Gucci and a long list of up-and-coming models. Her original work has been on display at art galleries around the world since 2015.

Andy Dixon

Andy Dixon is celebrated for his bright, warm, colorful aesthetics that’s both bold and captivating, yet easy-going and playful. Exploring “the psychology of value and the taboo entanglement of fine art and luxury,” Dixon creates highly relatable pieces portraying luscious, cosy interiors to die for.

To.keep.blooming is an uplifting Instagram account, filled with positive gifts that talk about mental health issues. The mind behind this great account is a 23-year-old called Addie, who is dealing with mental health issues herself, and wants to help other people with similar problems.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6qc3aQgbIo/
