]]>“The natural world compels me to explore it, delve deeper into it, and use the tools at my disposal to paint some frisson of my visceral connection to it,” relayed Hutchings Edlund in a piece she wrote for Artsy Shark. She invites the viewer to create his own narrative within the context of her art and to experience it in a positive and satisfying way. “All of my work is a communication between me and you,” she stressed.
With her work highly esteemed and collected in Canada, England, Germany, France, Italy, and the United States, there are plenty of people with whom she can communicate through her paintings. Her work has also won awards, and in October 2018, Hutchings Edlund was a recipient of the Dutchess County Executive Arts Award for Individual Artist that recognizes an individual residing in Dutchess County [NY], whose achievements in her discipline are widely recognized and who has demonstrated a compelling or unique artistic vision.
But though centered around the natural world, Hutchings Edlund admits to finding inspiration in other settings as well. “I find creative stimulation in unlikely places, such as a city street bathed in glistening, late-day light following a rain shower,” she reflects. “Such stimuli are the seeds from which ideas grow.”

I believe the primary function of art is to trigger a moment of transcendence in the viewer, in short to fill one with wonder,” the artist wrote on her personal website and added that she works mainly with oil, but sometimes she likes experimenting with other mediums, as well.
“My technique is extremely detailed, applying many layers and glazes to achieve a sense of space and mood. I keep working at a piece until I feel that I have arrived at an expression of palpable space and mood.”

]]>A creative through and through, Hanson began painting when she was just a child, and has been commissioned by the age of ten (!). When she was twelve-years-old she was officially employed by a mural studio, learning the techniques of acrylics on the grand scale of forty-foot canvases.
But her technique was also formed by observing her natural surroundings. After a lifetime of experimenting in different styles and mediums, it wasn’t until Hanson began rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon that her painting style was consolidated by a single inspiration and force of nature. In these beautiful surroundings, she also decided to take on a life-long challenge: dedicating herself to creating one painting every week for the rest of her life.
“I think the modern or contemporary art world shies away from landscapes or natural beauty,” she told Art Aesthetics Magazine. “I don’t really understand why since it is one of the most pleasing art forms to the eye and certainly one of the most popular.”
Scrolling through her Instagram page, her position is made evidently clear.

]]>“Art was always my favorite subject in school, from kindergarten to high school,” the artist told Bored Panda. “My teachers would tell you; ‘there’s not a moment Regina isn’t making art’. They’d often find me sketching away in my notebook in the middle of a lesson.”
When creating her masterpieces, the young artist says that she likes listening to her paintings.
“My art shows a piece of the inner workings of my mind,” she added. “Symbols, textures and color that seek to transport the viewer and insight emotional freedom”. I like to listen to my painting and let it tell me what it wants to be – it changes a lot in the process. Often I don’t know what it means until it is finished.”

By applying thick pigment to the canvas with her brush and a palette knife she creates remarkable masterpieces which gives her 2D canvas a three-dimensional look.

]]>“I want a simple idea that is visually powerful and mysterious,” said the artist in an interview with It’s Nice That. “I want the paintwork to be as clear and pared back as I can make it and the color to work to bring out the idea.”
“Ideas start out as small pencil drawings. I will draw the idea up on a canvas in charcoal and sit with it for a month or so. If it survives that process, I start painting rough and loose at first, each layer becoming more refined and distilled. Some ideas take ten years to find form.”
Flint’s portraits have been featured in solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Hobart and she has exhibited in major state and regional galleries. She is about to have her first international show at Mother’s Tankstation Limited Dublin 2019. Reproductions of her paintings have also appeared in international publications including Oh Comely, It’s Nice That, and Printed Pages.
“All my best ideas for paintings come from actual places and moments in life that trigger some unexpected feeling that is layered in unconscious memories, often about the opposing forces of confinement and freedom. Always the body takes some important stance in expressing that feeling.”
