Brock DeBoer is an American artist who mainly works in ceramics. However, you won’t see DeBoer making plates and vessels. Instead, he creates astonishing porcelain sculptures inspired by everyday life.

DeBoer recreates everyday objects and items from pop culture, including cowboy boots, sneakers, basketballs, coolers, and much more.

According to DeBoer, he uses his “extensive knowledge of ceramic materials and processes” to bring his sculptures “a new life becoming heirlooms of the 21st century.

“By using classical motifs of cobalt patterns and true to life finishes DeBoer’s casts become suspended somewhere in the past and disguised in the present,” it states on his website.

DeBoer was born in South Dakota and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. The artist says that his Midwestern upbringing and the “ever-changing and vastly diverse landscape” of Los Angeles serve as a major influence on his work.

DeBoer received his Bachelor of Fine Arts-Ceramics degree at Kansas City Art Institute. His works have been exhibited across the United States in solo and group exhibitions while being featured in several high-profile publications like Create! Magazine and Fete Chinoise Magazine.

Los Angeles, California-based artist Devon DeJardin is a familiar name in the art world thanks to his series of paintings in which he explores the world of mythical creatures known as “Guardians”. Now, these creatures are coming to life thanks to collaboration with Hong Kong creative studio AllRightsReserved.

DeJardin and AllRightsReserved teamed up to create a new series of painted bronze sculptures known as Guardians Alastor. The project represents a culmination of DeJardin’s artistic journey in the past five years, most of which focused on expanding on his idea of guardians, mysterious entities that take up all sorts of different forms and provide protection and encouragement in moments of need.

The Guardians Alastor sculpture will be released in a limited quantity of 20 units. Interested collectors can apply on AllRightsReserved’s official webshop, DDTStore, and the 20 buyers will be determined via a draw in June.

“What’s exciting about this project is that sculptures provide permanence by existing as tangible, three-dimensional objects that endure over time,” said DeJardin when discussing the project in a video shared on DDTStore’s official social media. “The idea of having a ‘Guardian’ figure placed in locations all across the globe, during a time of ongoing world turbulence, I hope provides some type of comfort and protection to its host.”

When we think of traditional sculpture, we usually imagine busts from ancient Rome or works by Renaissance artists like Michelangelo. Well, French sculptor, Leo Caillard is on a mission to change your perception of traditional sculpture by combining it with hipster culture in his intriguing marble pieces.

Since the early 2010s, Caillard has been creating impressive marble sculptures that represent an unusual blend of past and present. While the sculptures are made in the Greco-Roman style, they don’t have features that fit the period. Instead, the subjects are donning long beards, sunglasses, and scarves, visually embracing the hipster culture.

The influence of hipster culture on Caillard’s works is visible in his several projects, including Hipster in Stone and Hipster Sculptures. The former included dressing the sculptures, including works of classical artists, into fashionable clothes. The latter sees Caillard creating busts in bronze that capture the hipster look in the most unusual ways.

“In order to imagine a new society, richer in meaning and beauty, it is essential to look to our Greco-Roman roots for new inspiration,” Caillard explains.

Caillard had solo exhibits across France while also being part of group exhibits in museums in Belgium, Switzerland, and the United States. He also frequently shares his newest creations on Instagram. Check out more of them below.

Gary Taxali’s artwork doesn’t shy away from the past. Rather, it embraces it wholeheartedly. A fan of all things retro, his work is in constant dialogue with the design and iconography of the 1930s, leaning on the visual language of vintage comics, pop culture, and period advertisements as he touches upon contemporary issues. A blend of past and present is always at play with Taxali, who often includes political commentary through his art.

Taxali’s fascination with the past is also apparent through his choice of materials. A mixed-media artist, his mediums are varied and include paintings, illustrations, and sculptures. “I have a couple of different rules when I work,” he further explained in an interview with Cool Hunting. “One of them is that I don’t really like to work on anything white—like a blank canvas or a fresh piece of paper. I think it’s very scary and intimidating.”

Working with the material rather than against it, Taxali is informed by the paper’s texture and color when beginning his piece. “I might do a drawing on a little piece of paper—a scrap paper from my studio—then I’ll think of where it’s going to end up,” he explains. Other times, he might use wood as his canvas. “I might pick up a wood panel or an aged piece of paper and I think of that as most of the picture being already done, and then I think of the character or drawing as finishing it. After that I might then add a word.”

Showcased at both public and private galleries and museums, over the years Taxali’s artwork has also been featured in top-tier magazines, publications, books, and public installations in the art. He also doesn’t dismiss commercial work and has collaborated with brands like MTV, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and Coca-Cola. His work also includes wooden toys, comics-inspired pieces, and merchandise.

A master of invention, being inspired by the past doesn’t mean his work isn’t original or unique. “The ideas are an extension of my work; I don’t do other people’s ideas,” stresses Taxali.

If there’s a silver lining to COVID-19, it’s the return of hobbies. Being homebound means reintroducing ourselves to pastimes like baking and knitting—and Terry Cook has been doing just that.

A self-proclaimed tinkerer and doodler, his hands are often busy with something: anything from the more traditional watercolor, acrylics, and inks, to the more experimental robotics and high voltage items. And then there’s also his experimentation with balloons.

Using balloons as sculptural material, he recreates humans and birds. “I am obsessed with birds (Mostly British and European) and have been since I was a child,” writes Cook on his website. His balloon heads came later, taking inspiration from the material itself.

“I thought it would be cool to use the creases that form naturally on the balloon surface as the latex begins to degrade and lose its form,” he writes. “I made heads and then photographed them over a period of weeks as they began to deflate. Some went quicker than others.”

Other creative endeavors are more traditional, and include illustration and paintings. “I paint whatever I like,” writes Cook on his website, “but usually things relating to my hobbies and interests. I have also painted things relating to pop culture icons even though I have little interest in them, purely for the joy of painting!”

His other interests include animals, insects, physics and biology, robotics, automatons, and magic tricks. His Instagram page is worth following for its experimental quality alone. He might just inspire you to get your hands dirty…

Jasmine Little creates stoneware vessels that channel ancient sculpting in imagined civilizations. Her creations highlight the constant tension between personal history and historical tradition.

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, Little trained at Copper Mountain College, Joshua Tree, CA, the University of California, Los Angeles, CA, and Adam State University, Alamosa, CO, with her practices including sculpting, drawing, and painting. But it’s her vessels that first caught our attention. Shaped like pillars or cylindrical vases, they are carved with decorative naive iconography that seems out of place and out of time.

According to Litte, the decorative carving of these surfaces is very much dictated by the materials themselves. Using clay that is hand-mixed in California, she incorporates foreign substances that create a distinctive surface. Little then carves directly into this clay while it is still wet and inlays additional materials that include porcelain, common gravel, and clinker bricks.

“A lot of the materials are really specific to place,” she explained in an interview with Art of Choice, “the gravel embedded in the surfaces is from the yard, the porcelain is one of his formulations, and the bricks are salvaged clinker bricks that are from the immediate area and reference the history of the arts and craft movement in Pasadena.”

Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. Scroll down to see some highlights.

Andrea Shearing’s artwork has a distinct flow to it. Inspired by nature, and more specifically by water, there’s a fluidity to her work, in terms of both her chosen mediums and themes. A hybrid between painting and sculpting, her abstract work explored the juxtapositions found in nature.

“I am interested in exploring the fluidity of water against the firm resistance of hard rock,” explained Shearing on her website. She notes that she is particularly fascinated by the movement of the ocean waves expressing the rhythm of life and the force and strength of nature.

But though her work is in direct dialogue with her natural surroundings, it isn’t meant to be representational or realistic. “My mission is to explore the emotional symbolism of something like a broken egg in a nest,” says Shearing. “This for me represents the tension between birth and death, the purity of simple form in contrast with nature’s complex structures and designs. The fragility of the shell which can beak and shatter versus its strength to encompass life and growth.”

With a background both in sculpture and painting, her creative process includes mixing minute amounts of paint to get the exact tone and intensity of colors she wants. “I work very carefully, thoughtfully considering composition and juxtaposition of tones and colors,” she notes. “I spend time choosing my palette very carefully as this is the platform from which I build the timbre and mood of the piece.”

Miniature sculptures are a great way to be reminded of childhood. Nothing is as adorable as tiny toys that fit your palm when you’re little, and they are still cute even when you grow up.

Raminta of Ramalama Creatures makes the cutest little animals we’ve ever seen! She uses polymer clay and with a lot of creativity, she turns every child’s dream into reality and makes tiny birds, snakes, bears, foxes, and many other animals.

“The process of making every creature and animal is very personal to me,” the artist told Brown Paper Bag. “It takes dozens of hours to complete the sculpture until it is exceptionally carefully hand-painted with maximum of details and finished with glossy varnish.”

Filip Hodas is an artist from Prague whose recent work includes a series of 3D sculptures showing fossilized skulls of famous cartoon characters. Hodas’ Cartoon Fossils series features Minnie Mouse, Spongebob, Tweety Bird, and many other characters. Next to each sculpture, he added a year when each character first appeared on TV and their made-up zoological names.

“Initially, I wanted to make them stylized as dinosaur fossils set up in a museum environment, but later decided against it, as the skulls didn’t look very recognizable on their own—especially with parts broken or missing. That’s why I opted for (a) less damaged look and also added some assets to each of the characters,” This is Colossal quoted the artist.

Scroll down to see how Hodas made the sculptures. He used a bunch of programs like Cinema 4D, Zbrush, 3D Coat, and more to create each of them and we can really see that he put a lot of effort into this collection.

Julia Nizamutdinova, also known as Julia Cyberflora on social media, has many descriptions to her name; she describes herself as a multidisciplinary artist, architect, designer, and inventor who creates various sculptures using plastic, aluminum, and steel.

Her latest creation is a rotating kinetic sculpture that looks like a pine cone. She revealed that INFI is a part of a larger project called Cyberflora which she describes as a “mechanical organism that is an ideal futuristic inhabitant of modern space.”

“They contain a meditative therapeutic effect from the contemplation of smooth hypnotic movements and the beauty of futuristic forms,” she shared on her Instagram page where she has attracted almost 3,000 followers.

Although Nizamutdinova doesn’t have a huge following, her creations are definitely worth checking out. We really enjoyed browsing through her Instagram page and we believe that you will enjoy it, too. Follow her for future updates or have a look at her YouTube channel for more.
