This past year, we all spent a lot more time at home. And while the past months have seen us slowly return to the office, this new at-home lifestyle is here to stay, forcing us to rethink our living space. When it comes to home styling, interior designers agree that 2021 is all about natural elements. Botanical patterns and house plants have never been more on-trend. But you don’t have to take our word for it—recent interior trends can be spotted all across Instagram, from designers to illustrators.

Our recent design inspiration comes from California-based illustrator Leah Goren. Zooming in on domestic life, Goren’s illustrations feature a healthy dose of houseplants and natural patterns. Collaborations include brands and publications like Anthropologie, The New York Times, Penguin Random House, Vanity Fair, and Urban Outfitters.

On top of her work as an illustrator, Goren also works as a surface pattern designer, which means her floral patterns can be spotted on an array of products including fabrics, ceramics, and even storage bins.

“I like making patterns because they repeat endlessly and I don’t feel restricted to containing my drawing within a box,” Goren remarked once in an interview with Spoonflower. “I’m always interested in home interiors, and I’d love to see my patterns on wallpaper or an upholstered chair or couch.”

Indeed, scrolling through her feed you can’t help but be inspired to freshen up your living space by introducing more natural elements to it. One might argue that plants make any space look beautiful. But it’s good to note that they also have a positive impact on your health and mood—a true win-win when it comes to rethinking our home life in the days after COVID-19.

Scroll for some inspiration.

Cartoon characters are usually portrayed as kindhearted and inherently good. But artist Ed Harrington doesn’t view them as such. For Harrington, even our favorite cartoon characters have some dark secrets. He is set on exposing them in his illustrations that are part amazing and part ruining our childhood.

For example, in his world, Winnie the Pooh isn’t some kind of bear that just wants to get his hands on some honey. Instead, he is an immoral figure that enjoys drinking.

Speaking about his inspiration for this unusual series, Harrington admitted that he actually has no “real” idea for it. Instead, he is just drawing things that he finds funny and somehow it all works out for the best. But he does have a basic approach to each work.

Harrington explains that he picks out a character and then tries to imagine what it would be like if they had different or more difficult lives.

“Or I like to think about parts of a famous character that we never get to see and what might have been hidden from us all this time,” he adds.

You can check out more of Harrington’s work by visiting his website or Instagram. Also, you can see our favorites below.

Gary Taxali’s artwork doesn’t shy away from the past. Rather, it embraces it wholeheartedly. A fan of all things retro, his work is in constant dialogue with the design and iconography of the 1930s, leaning on the visual language of vintage comics, pop culture, and period advertisements as he touches upon contemporary issues. A blend of past and present is always at play with Taxali, who often includes political commentary through his art.

Taxali’s fascination with the past is also apparent through his choice of materials. A mixed-media artist, his mediums are varied and include paintings, illustrations, and sculptures. “I have a couple of different rules when I work,” he further explained in an interview with Cool Hunting. “One of them is that I don’t really like to work on anything white—like a blank canvas or a fresh piece of paper. I think it’s very scary and intimidating.”

Working with the material rather than against it, Taxali is informed by the paper’s texture and color when beginning his piece. “I might do a drawing on a little piece of paper—a scrap paper from my studio—then I’ll think of where it’s going to end up,” he explains. Other times, he might use wood as his canvas. “I might pick up a wood panel or an aged piece of paper and I think of that as most of the picture being already done, and then I think of the character or drawing as finishing it. After that I might then add a word.”

Showcased at both public and private galleries and museums, over the years Taxali’s artwork has also been featured in top-tier magazines, publications, books, and public installations in the art. He also doesn’t dismiss commercial work and has collaborated with brands like MTV, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and Coca-Cola. His work also includes wooden toys, comics-inspired pieces, and merchandise.

A master of invention, being inspired by the past doesn’t mean his work isn’t original or unique. “The ideas are an extension of my work; I don’t do other people’s ideas,” stresses Taxali.

Eliza Williams, the creative artist behind Doolittle Illustrations, creates vibrant art in collaboration with big and small brands and independent work when she has extra time. She calls herself a “creator of things” as she combines different disciplines like illustration, drawing, and painting. She’s still young, but she’s on a path to become a well-known artist as she already has a lot of attention.

Williams works with clients like Spotify, and one look at her work is enough to see why they are choosing her. She first took up illustration when she was a kid. In 2017, she started sharing her work with the world as she was attending a communications design course at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. “Creating my own illustrative worlds has always been exciting to me, they’re like little worlds to escape to,” she tells It’s Nice That.

Once she decided to put herself out a bit more, her art gained a lot of attention from relevant sources, bringing her more work. “It’s all resulted in me now doing what I love as a career, and I’m so thankful for all the support I’ve received from people and other creatives along the way,” she notes.

The weather is nice and staying home is hard. We get it. But thanks to Jess Phoenix, you can enjoy spring throughout the entire year. Based in Seattle, the illustrator and surface designer specializes in florals and vibrant, almost neon, colors. Her designs, eye-popping to say the least, can be found on anything from stationery and book covers to embroidery and ceramics.

“My work emerged from a desire to produce art as bright and as vibrant as I wanted,” explained Phoenix in an interview with Papirmass. “I love my day job, but sometimes I’m told to change my colors so they ‘don’t vibrate so much.’ I WANT my art to vibrate!”

Funnily enough, her choice to illustrate mainly, if not exclusively, flowers is a practical one. “I choose to paint flowers simply because they are an excellent vehicle for exploring color,” she says. According to Phoenix, most of the flowers and leaves are imagined and as such, provide a vehicle for her vibrant color stories.

“I’m curious about color,” she admits, “which makes me want to explore it and ‘get creative’ with it. Everyone has something they’re curious about, so I think everyone has that innate potential to explore that curiosity and in turn, be creative.”

According to Aley Hanson, freelance illustration is not for the faint of heart. “It’s hard,” wrote Hansen in a recent Instagram post, “but for those who love it more than any other thing, it’s worth it.”

Hansen knows a thing or two about hard work and dedication. Having studied illustration, for years she put her passion aside thinking she wasn’t talented enough.

It was only after spending 9 days in silent meditation in 2018 that she came to the realization that illustration is her true passion and calling. “Since that moment I’ve been hungrily developing my skills and style, and I’m so grateful for this vocation and the privilege of being able to pursue it,” writes Hansen.

Nowadays, Hansen encourages her followers to find strength in vulnerability and courage in self-love. “The magic ingredient to creating is believing in yourself and your creative power,” she reflected once in a candid interview with The Design Kids.

“It took some time for that to land with me, and once I did my creativity took off. When I start to trash talk myself (as we all do), I stop, look in a mirror and say ‘I have a strong creative voice’. It’s super dorky and it works. Gotta feel your own work for others to feel it too.”

This sense of optimism and perseverance also shows throughout her work. Her illustrations—colorful, naïve, and unapologetically wonky—spark instant joy, gaining an impressive following online. Describing her style as “neo-primitive,” Hansen’s work, simple as it is, has an iconic quality to it.

“Even your weaknesses lead you to create in a unique way,” says Hansen. “And if you’re conscious of them, you can push them to play to your advantage.” Follow her creative journey on Instagram.

Ichijo Hikaru is a Japanese illustrator whose work is different from anything else you’ll see. She uses Ben-Day dots and bold colors to emphasize subjects she represents without faces. She includes every race and body type, showing how beautiful diversity can be, which is rarely seen in the Japanese art scene.

“I originally wanted to be a graphic designer, so I did some design work at first,” Hikaru tells It’s Nice That. “But during the course of my work, I realized that I was more interested in the illustrations used on posters and packages than in the designs themselves, so I started illustrating.”

The influence of her graphic design background can be seen in her work, but her ability to replicate printing techniques in digital tools absolutely steals the show.

The artist has recently started exploring ceramics too, just as a way to relax. It’s her way to get away from the screens and create something three-dimensional in the real world.

Her plans for the future include creating more creative and overall better advertisement illustrations and continuing to grow her social media following. Scroll down to see some of her recent work.

Sara Hagale’s illustration style is minimalistic, and yet she manages to say everything she wants with it. Less is often more, and that’s exactly what her art proves. We didn’t need much to fall in love, so check out for yourself below.

Hagale uses simple tools—a piece of off-white paper and a pencil to create fascinating illustrations. She uses a lot of white (or in her case, off-white) space for better effect. It feels like her illustrations can breathe which makes them very refreshing.

There are three reasons why she chose this style. Her graphic design education background is one of them. In graphic design, according to her, “the message is everything and anything that gets in the way of that may as well not be there,” she tells It’s Nice That. The second reason is personal, and it’s that she finds this kind of style calming to draw. The third reason is what she hopes to achieve with the viewer. She wants the people seeing her art to be able to focus on one thing completely.

Her Instagram page currently has almost 500,000 followers and we recommend you check it out if you want to see more of her work. In the meantime, see some of our favorites below.

Leo Espinosa’s illustrations present a playful universe, full of color and movement. In one, a baker is seen surrounded by bread baskets, while another shows a funny-looking woman holding a funny-looking dog.

It’s these kinds of every day, humoristic snippets that make Espinosa a sought-after editorial illustrator, with publications of his seen on The New YorkerThe New York Times, and The Atlantic standing in line to get his work.

But oddly enough, Espinosa didn’t start out as an illustrator but rather stumbled into his vocation: “Curiosity has led my career and it has proven to be a good business strategy,” he admitted once in an interview with AI-AP.  Based in Bogotá, Colombia, Espinosa had first worked full-time as a designer and art director.

“Even though my illustration career didn’t kick off until the mid-90s, I like to think that I started working while I was still attending design school,” he reflects.

“I got a small job doing storyboards for an ad agency, which lead to a designer position, and later on I became an art director; by the time I left Colombia at the age of 22, I had worked in three large multinational agencies.”

Aside from his editorial work, Espinosa also delved into character and product design, as well as animation, logo design, comics, gallery work, and children’s books. He has collaborated with brands like Nickelodeon, Swatch, and Facebook, and his work has also been featured in one animated series and gallery shows worldwide.

Illustrator Maggie Cowles celebrates daily life with her food-themed art. Although it looks simple, her narrative actually tells a bigger story. Food is often more than just food. Cowles focuses on “comfort, security, the warmth of food, familiar spaces and familiar meals,” as she tells It’s Nice That.

Her focus is on set tables with multiple meals, which tell stories of families and friends dining together. However, there are no people in her illustrations. “The work explores how rooms can be full even when they’re empty,” she notes. “They’re an ode to gatherings past, present, and future.”

Cowles has a rich background in creative work. She was born in NYC and studied textiles at Rhode Island School of Design. After graduation, she worked for companies like Converse and Madewell, but always had personal projects on the side. After moving to LA, her own creative work ended up being her priority, so she’s a full-time self-employed creative now. As she says, she paints, draws, and illustrates all day, every day.
