This past year, we all spent a lot more time at home. And while the past months have seen us slowly return to the office, this new at-home lifestyle is here to stay, forcing us to rethink our living space. When it comes to home styling, interior designers agree that 2021 is all about natural elements. Botanical patterns and house plants have never been more on-trend. But you don’t have to take our word for it—recent interior trends can be spotted all across Instagram, from designers to illustrators.

Our recent design inspiration comes from California-based illustrator Leah Goren. Zooming in on domestic life, Goren’s illustrations feature a healthy dose of houseplants and natural patterns. Collaborations include brands and publications like Anthropologie, The New York Times, Penguin Random House, Vanity Fair, and Urban Outfitters.

On top of her work as an illustrator, Goren also works as a surface pattern designer, which means her floral patterns can be spotted on an array of products including fabrics, ceramics, and even storage bins.

“I like making patterns because they repeat endlessly and I don’t feel restricted to containing my drawing within a box,” Goren remarked once in an interview with Spoonflower. “I’m always interested in home interiors, and I’d love to see my patterns on wallpaper or an upholstered chair or couch.”

Indeed, scrolling through her feed you can’t help but be inspired to freshen up your living space by introducing more natural elements to it. One might argue that plants make any space look beautiful. But it’s good to note that they also have a positive impact on your health and mood—a true win-win when it comes to rethinking our home life in the days after COVID-19.

Scroll for some inspiration.

Cartoon characters are usually portrayed as kindhearted and inherently good. But artist Ed Harrington doesn’t view them as such. For Harrington, even our favorite cartoon characters have some dark secrets. He is set on exposing them in his illustrations that are part amazing and part ruining our childhood.

For example, in his world, Winnie the Pooh isn’t some kind of bear that just wants to get his hands on some honey. Instead, he is an immoral figure that enjoys drinking.

Speaking about his inspiration for this unusual series, Harrington admitted that he actually has no “real” idea for it. Instead, he is just drawing things that he finds funny and somehow it all works out for the best. But he does have a basic approach to each work.

Harrington explains that he picks out a character and then tries to imagine what it would be like if they had different or more difficult lives.

“Or I like to think about parts of a famous character that we never get to see and what might have been hidden from us all this time,” he adds.

You can check out more of Harrington’s work by visiting his website or Instagram. Also, you can see our favorites below.

Comics we can relate to are the best ones to read, right? Well, Bella Sriwantana knows how to entertain us. She describes herself as a Thai illustrator living in Belgium who draws comics and illustrations about her daily life. She also likes mentioning that cooking and spending time with her family and dog Sunny are the things she cannot live without.

The talented artist currently has more than 115,000 Instagram followers and receives thousands of reactions on each work. She said in an interview for Bored Panda that many things greatly influenced her work, Japanese manga especially.

“I believe that Japanese manga does have a lot of influences on my style, and I did read a lot of them when I was young,” she explained. “In order to make my comics fun and enjoyable for my audience, I studied facial expressions and enhanced them with my own art style to make them even more unique.”

Her artistic journey began in her childhood and until 2014. Throughout all that time, she only drew traditionally. Then, she transferred to digital art. Sriwantana needs around two hours to finish a two-panel comic and two-and-a-half for a four-panel comic.

She is very grateful for her audience and all the support she has been receiving on social media. Scroll down and check out her work below.

According to Aley Hanson, freelance illustration is not for the faint of heart. “It’s hard,” wrote Hansen in a recent Instagram post, “but for those who love it more than any other thing, it’s worth it.”

Hansen knows a thing or two about hard work and dedication. Having studied illustration, for years she put her passion aside thinking she wasn’t talented enough.

It was only after spending 9 days in silent meditation in 2018 that she came to the realization that illustration is her true passion and calling. “Since that moment I’ve been hungrily developing my skills and style, and I’m so grateful for this vocation and the privilege of being able to pursue it,” writes Hansen.

Nowadays, Hansen encourages her followers to find strength in vulnerability and courage in self-love. “The magic ingredient to creating is believing in yourself and your creative power,” she reflected once in a candid interview with The Design Kids.

“It took some time for that to land with me, and once I did my creativity took off. When I start to trash talk myself (as we all do), I stop, look in a mirror and say ‘I have a strong creative voice’. It’s super dorky and it works. Gotta feel your own work for others to feel it too.”

This sense of optimism and perseverance also shows throughout her work. Her illustrations—colorful, naïve, and unapologetically wonky—spark instant joy, gaining an impressive following online. Describing her style as “neo-primitive,” Hansen’s work, simple as it is, has an iconic quality to it.

“Even your weaknesses lead you to create in a unique way,” says Hansen. “And if you’re conscious of them, you can push them to play to your advantage.” Follow her creative journey on Instagram.

Leo Espinosa’s illustrations present a playful universe, full of color and movement. In one, a baker is seen surrounded by bread baskets, while another shows a funny-looking woman holding a funny-looking dog.

It’s these kinds of every day, humoristic snippets that make Espinosa a sought-after editorial illustrator, with publications of his seen on The New YorkerThe New York Times, and The Atlantic standing in line to get his work.

But oddly enough, Espinosa didn’t start out as an illustrator but rather stumbled into his vocation: “Curiosity has led my career and it has proven to be a good business strategy,” he admitted once in an interview with AI-AP.  Based in Bogotá, Colombia, Espinosa had first worked full-time as a designer and art director.

“Even though my illustration career didn’t kick off until the mid-90s, I like to think that I started working while I was still attending design school,” he reflects.

“I got a small job doing storyboards for an ad agency, which lead to a designer position, and later on I became an art director; by the time I left Colombia at the age of 22, I had worked in three large multinational agencies.”

Aside from his editorial work, Espinosa also delved into character and product design, as well as animation, logo design, comics, gallery work, and children’s books. He has collaborated with brands like Nickelodeon, Swatch, and Facebook, and his work has also been featured in one animated series and gallery shows worldwide.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” says the famous quote attributed to Leonardo da Vinci; and at least when it comes to art, truer words have never been spoken.

Case in point: Emily Isabella’s illustrations. Made primarily using gouache, they present a simple, minimalist reality sprinkled with flowers and delicacies.

Based in the Hudson Valley, north of NYC, Isabella grew up in a family of artists and quickly realized her passion lies in the same field: “I remember being in the hallway of my first grade classroom and having an epiphany that I wanted to write and illustrate books!,” she shared in an interview with Red Cap Cards.

“I remember my mom advising me and saying, ‘Even when you don’t have work, work,’” she recalls. “The only way to improve is to practice.”

These days, Isabella’s practice is mainly focused on illustrations and textile design. You might have seen her work printed on bedding, clothing, and fabric, but also an array of products like dishes, rugs, toys, furniture, and wallpaper. Recent collaborations include Anthropologie and Kate Spade, with her products quickly snatched from the shelves.

With a background in textile design, Isabella’s illustrations make for wonderful patterns that often highlight the simple beauty of craftsmanship.

“As I grew older, I felt the need to have my own identity and being an artist seemed too expected,” says the illustrator. “I finally gave in to the fact that I wouldn’t want to do anything else and went to art school but I majored in Fibers which seemed different enough.”

Have you ever stepped inside a brightly colored room and instantly felt your spirits soar? There’s nothing like bright colors to lift you up when you’re feeling down, and that’s what happens when you look at Allison Filice’s illustrations. Bright and vibrant, her work will add a playful twist to your moody Instagram feed.

“My work is about bringing a friendly face to the unknown, and to help people explore the depths within themselves and the universe,” said Filice in an interview with Ballpitmag. “I just want people to realize that life is more than running errands and going to work, that there’s magic in the space between everything.”

Filice’s positive attitude shows throughout her work, exploring the magical space that lies between everyday moments. Based in San Francisco, Filice originally studied graphic and user experience design but these days works mainly in illustration.

Her illustrations, while graphic and vibrant, also have an element of surprise to them, that might call to mind more psychedelic/surrealist artists. Indeed, Filice admits to being inspired by artists like Moebius, Milton Glaser, and Salvador Dali.

Other inspiration sources of hers are music, architecture, and nature: “I try to go for daily walks in the park while listening to music and just let my intuition go,” she notes. “I’ll usually come back home feeling refreshed and inspired.”

Following her Instagram page might just have the same positive effect!

Minneapolis-based illustrator Kelly Abeln makes us giggle shamelessly with her approachable, outspoken comic strips shared through her Instagram page. In a year of uncertainty, Abeln’s work is the kind that makes you feel less alone with the ups and downs of everyday life.

A recent favorite of ours is a series of illustrations that captures perfectly the silver lining that might be had in times of pandemic.

“During a time of crisis, my mind doesn’t need to invent any,” reads one caption which sees an illustrated version of Abeln meditating in the midst of a raging fire.

“A year of lowered expectations, practice accepting uncertainty, and not leaving my comfort zone has reduced my anxiety,” notes the candid illustrator. “But what happens when this ends?!”

Such forthcoming reflections are what make Abeln’s work a delightful treat that has amassed some 15,000 plus followers on Instagram.

“I love that what I want to do aligns with how I support myself,” Abeln shared with MCAD Alumni. “I also love seeing people’s reactions to my work and that I get to see things I create out in the world.”

A freelance illustrator with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Illustration from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Abeln agrees with the old saying that variety is the spice of life. “The variety of working from home, working on a contract assignment, and personal projects keeps things interesting,” she notes.

And as for inspiration—she might as well turn to her work desk. “Inspiration comes from working,” says Abeln. “Just keep making stuff and ideas will come.”

Illustrator Jason Raish followed his creative passion wherever it took him. Born in Seoul, South Korea, he came to the U.S. with his family at the age of three. After being raised in upstate New York, he studied fine arts for two years at SUNY Albany, then one year abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, after which he started over at the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in NYC, receiving a four-year Bachelors in Illustration.

But after another seven years in NYC, he decided to move to Beijing in 2008, not knowing when or if he’d be back. His trip turned into a six-year adventure around the globe, living in cities like Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, Barcelona, London, and Paris, all while working as a freelance illustrator. His long list of selected clients included the New York Times, Nike, Facebook (Singapore), and the Smithsonian.

Now back in NYC, where he’s based in Park Slope Brooklyn, Raish’s creative journey has yet to come to its final conclusion: “It’s been a slow struggle that’s slowly paid off,” he admitted in an interview with Working Not Working Magazine. “And I don’t know if there’s really one turning point. It’s just been putting in the work, pushing myself, and not settling on good enough.”

Know for his hyperrealist illustrations, his work includes portraits as well as landscapes and cityscapes. Choosing his colors and compositions carefully, his pieces are likely to draw you in, where you might linger on details such as skin texture or the folds of a coat. “I want to keep pushing myself to think of better concepts and not over render everything, which is hard because my brain just wants to render stuff,” says Raish.
