“Softer and Wild” is the textile brand you didn’t know you needed in your life. Run by designer Tatiana Nedialkova, it’s the soft colorful touch your home needs right now. Their home goods include anything from oven mitts and aprons to kitchen towels and everything in between.

Working alongside textile designer Paula Downes, Nedialkova draws and designs each pattern printed on her products, after which the color scheme and fabric are chosen, with the chosen materials meant to last a long while. “My illustrations are a mix between the Scandinavian aesthetic and Bulgarian folk tales,” explained Nedialkova in an interview with Etsy’s blog, “and they’re also influenced by Bulgarian artists from the ’70s who created these beautiful logo types.”

Originally from Bulgaria, Nedialkova draws inspiration from the places she visited around the world. “I’m Bulgarian originally, but I’ve also lived in Brighton, UK, which is a beautiful town with old architecture,” she notes. “There are amazing decorations and patterns on the houses—circles and ornaments. I translate those into illustrations as well.”

But her creative passion sparked a lot earlier than that. “Something that influenced me from a young age was the drive people had to decorate and personalize their living spaces with found materials, and find beauty in the simplest of objects,” she says. You’d want to see what she has to offer.

Maria Fiter designs standalone lamps that are practical, sustainable, and artsy, adding not only light to the room, but also a statement. Design is equally important to Fiter as the materials themselves, with a clear preference for eco-friendly and natural materials, that add make for a grounded, earthy effect.

“I think about people who like natural materials, like paper or wood,” Fiter explained in an interview with the Etsy blog. “That’s the kind of person I am; I like these materials in my home, too. I also think about making things that are quite simple in design.”

But creating something simple isn’t as simple as it seems. “First I think about what I could make and I start doing some sketches,” says Fiter, describing the process that goes behind the scenes. “Once I know the shape I want, I think about which mold would serve me best. I use different kinds of molds: Some are balloons, some are cardboard, some are made with funnels, and one lamp, the Metamorfozis, is made from a Coke bottle mold.”

According to Fiter, she was always drawn to manual work, enjoying activities like painting, sewing, and making furniture. Her love of lamps came later, during her Erasmus internship, while working with wood. “It’s great when you can reuse things that already exist and give them a second life,” she notes.

Eny Lee Parker designs unique objects that echo human emotion. A designer of objects and spaces, her work isn’t meant to blend in with the environment but rather, calls attention to itself, performing both as a practical piece of furniture or lighting as well as a standalone art piece.

Born in Brazil and currently based in Savannah, Georgia, Lee Parker’s introduction to furniture design was through her work as an interior designer. “Interior designers love and appreciate furniture, so the appreciation was always there,” she explained in an interview with Matter of Hand. “But when I was working in residential interior design, we used to have to pick out furniture a lot and I always wished that aspects of the pieces were different in this or that way.”

Still, it took time for Lee Parker to muster the courage needed to turn her attention to furniture making. “I never had confidence that I could actually design things until I came back to Savannah and enrolled in a master’s program for furniture,” she notes.

Her objects are made of organic materials, that make for an earthy, grounded, effect. Those include wood and metals, as well as ceramics, another, separate, passion of Lee Parker. Each piece is sketched out beforehand, providing blueprints for her collection. “I have to know generally what height or width I need,” she says. “It’s so much easier for me to have everything drawn; it’s kind of like having blueprints. You kind of have to. It’s a little different than being in sculpture.”

Jan Klingler’s lamps aren’t just plain sources of light. Rather, they’re unique, if eerie, sculptures that look as though they belong in a laboratory. But if his designs stand out, the work that goes on behind the scenes is altogether incredible. As it turns out, the lamps themselves are made of bacteria swabbed from people, places, or items.

Each piece is custom made, with samples taken from people, places or things that hold a position of importance to the client. These samples of bacteria are grown into a unique piece in the form of commissioned work. “When producing a piece for commissioned work, the customer is very much involved in this process,” explained Klingler in an interview with Sixtysix Magazine, “getting to choose between the colors that grow or having a pure mix of all of them.”

According to the industrial designer, the finished custom products turn through this scientific-like process into vessels that contain past memories. “The possibilities are as individual as each one of us,” he writes on his website. These possibilities include swabbing the location of a first date, a personal souvenir from a memorable journey, or the remainder of loved one far away.

“We all consist of 10 times more bacteria than human cells,” Klingler states. “Every living being and place has its own unique and personal microbiological fingerprint. In a crossover between science, art, and industrial design, the bacteria lamp uses this fact to create stand out conversational pieces.”

Interior designer Dmitry Reutov doesn’t shy away from color. On the contrary, he strives to incorporate it in his designs, designing home interiors that aren’t intended for the faint of heart.

“When creating interiors, I always turn to nature, asking myself what it would look like in nature,” he told Sixtysix Magazine. “Even when I look at plastic as a modern man-made material, I associate it with nature. I can relate transparent plastic to ice.”

Though based in Russia, his work takes him around the globe, with his schedule increasingly tight. Since 2007, Reutov runs his own architectural and construction company, with his studio conducting projects of varying complexity from residential interiors to business spaces. These projects are carried out with his own team of builders.

Reutov explains that as his work varies, so does his day to day. He usually starts off his day with some decision making: how to make things, who’s going where, etc. Then there’s purchase orders, site inspections, and endless meetings with clients, construction workers, and contractors. Still, he makes sure to leave space for inspiration. “I always spare myself some days for pure creativity because, at the end of a day, I am creating all the projects myself,” he says.

“I don’t call it work,” adds Reutov. “This is a process for me, a process I love. I’m solving problems. Seven days a week.” Join him on his creative journey via his Instagram page.

Jean-Luc Godard’s lamps demand attention, being more of a statement piece than simple light fixtures. Describing his work as “sculptural lighting,” Godard’s original style has developed over time, after years in furniture design and custom sign making.

“While others may develop one style and reproduce countless versions of it, for me, the creative process is a journey that takes you to places limited only by your imagination,” he explains on his personal website.

Originally from France, Godard moved to the United States in 1989 and is currently based in northwestern Connecticut, where his studio sits at the very edge of a nature preserve in the rolling foothills of the Berkshires. Working with raw materials such as wood and metal, his organic designs are in direct dialogue with his natural surroundings.

“I pride myself on having a keen eye for choosing the perfect materials,” he noted adding that these materials have beautiful natural curves, which makes his pieces unique and which define his work as that of a naturalist. Having a meadow right outside the studio also helps, as inspiration is aplenty.

Here are some of his original designs.

Charlotte Jade invites you to bring the beauty of the outside world inside your home, through her hand-drawn patterns, featured on an array of products as well as wallpapers. Based on her love of nature, texture, and pattern, Jade’s business (launched in 2015), celebrates the richness of shapes and forms found in our natural environments.

Her design collections are available on wallpaper, textiles, upholstery fabrics, furniture, cushions, ceramic tiles, and flooring, with all products printed and made in the UK. “I hand draw all my designs, which creates quite a personal feel to my designs,” she noted in an interview with Jung Katz. “I then apply color (which is generally quite bold) and edit these hand-drawn images digitally using photoshop.”

Clearly inspired by the natural world, both flora and fauna, Jade is also very much inspired by fashion and likes incorporating current trends in her work. Her designs are also based around geometric prints, making for a striking juxtaposition between organic and manmade forms.

“My work is quite detailed and I generally use a pencil to create my patterns,” she explains, adding that she does, however, enjoy combining pencil and paint. “I feel these two mediums create quite unique pattern designs,” she says. Scroll down to see some of her patterns in action.

There’s nothing more comforting than a good, cozy blanket. Karrie Dean knows best. With her business model based wholly on blankets, Dean’s products can be viewed at once across a bed or in little window panes of color, all folded up on a shelf. Providing comfort as well as color and texture, her colorful throws can upgrade your habitat from boring to ravishing.

According to Dean, blankets also provide the perfect canvas. “There’s nothing wrong with loving color,” she claims on her website. “Loving cozy. I don’t know about you, but I get the feeling you hate boring and scratchy as much as I do.” Fair enough.

But no one is born a blanket maker, and Dean’s path to textile was a long and meandering one. In fact, it was only after being laid off from her work in advertising that she decided to put her art degree to good use. “So I started sketching, spent a ridiculous amount of time tracking down some awesome artisans who can do the softest, happiest things with beautiful fibers,” she relayed on her website.

With throws being the perfect canvas for her geometric designs and colorful patterns, she decided to take a leap of faith. “Even though I didn’t have money, I was looking at throws,” she told the Kansas City Star. “I thought of that as an accessory, but something that still, you open it up and it’s big and it’s pretty and you can put something on it, and it can be art kind of.”

Based between Seoul and London, her work spans interior design, furniture, branding, and visual identities. With years of working experience in the field of interior design behind her, she’s currently studying for her Master’s in product and furniture design in Kingston University in London.

“I think it’s important to have aesthetically beautiful designs,” stressed Kim, explaining the importance of good design. “When I see a product that is not beautiful, sometimes I get angry,” she added. But her designs aren’t just pretty, they’re also thought-provoking. “I want to stimulate people’s thoughts through my design work,” she explained. “I want to proceed with the design of a new perspective that does not exist through ideas, materials, and forms.”

“But before that, the reason, story and why this design is needed are more important,” she concludes. “How do I think differently from others? This is the first question.” Follow her creative thought process via Instagram.

Improving your interior design skills doesn’t necessarily mean breaking the bank or breaking your walls. Sometimes, a unique lamp or a graphic poster can serve as a statement piece that really pulls the whole room together. Case in point: Bride & Wolfe’s unique home pieces.

Run by Miranda Moreira, the brand is known for its line of distinctive objects inspired by art as well as pop culture. These include graphic art pieces that are made from mirror, enamel, and powder-coated steel, characterized by modern forms and a bold sense of color. The ranges are all designed in Australia and made in small quantities in collaboration with local Melbourne makers.

Based in Melbourne, Moreira studied Fine Arts, after which she lived and worked in Paris for six years. Establishing the Bride & Wolfe brand on her return to Melbourne, she sought to bring together her passion for art and European craftsmanship with the youthful irreverence of Australian culture.

“I’m so visual, seeing colors and patterns whilst food shopping can be as inspiring as looking through art books or surfing the net,” shared Moreira in an interview with the Little Citizens Boutique Blog. “I’ve become more nostalgic since I’ve become a mum, and my childhood in St Kilda is hugely influential- panel vans, hot summers on the beach, icypoles and Oz rock!”

Whatever her sources of inspiration are, the result is something you’d want to get your hands on.
