Is it practicing hours and hours on end, for years and years straight? From a technical standpoint, yes—it’s crucial for an artist to have the foundational skills to back up his or her vision. But, friends, being an artist is about so much more than just that.

Austin Howlett, a man with nearly 77,000 followers on Instagram, is the perfect example of a true artist. Beyond his obvious technical skillset, the young man has a vision for what he wants his art to say. A surrealist painter by trade, his art sends messages that are warming to the soul. Jackson is known for his surreal illustrations in which he dissects animals and humans in a really unique way. His works show their inner parts, which are largely different than the science taught us. He imagines sharks as complex machines run by humans, Bugs Bunny as a puppet controlled by an evil genius, and much more.

Jackson, whose works are inspired by pop culture, technology, and science fiction, predominantly works in film and music industry, but also creates art for his fans on social media. Thanks to the popularity of his illustrations, he got a chance to work with some high-profile brands including Universal Studios, SyFy channel, and bands like Pearl Jam and Blink 182.

But if we are brave and lucky, we might escape entering the void of dull, nine-to-five living, just like Hansruedi Ramsauer did. He turned his back on a 20-year long career in finance to start his own web design company, and this path took him on a journey he never expected.  

He became a popular digital artist whose photo manipulations are taking over Instagram. From outstanding cityscapes to hypnotizing natural landscapes and beautiful portraits, this Sweedish artist is seizing all new opportunities in life. What is also important, the audience loves his work. So far, he has over 33k supportive followers on Instagram. 

Ramsauer said that sometimes he loves to look at photographs and imagine what he could do with them. That’s how he created some of his most notable and celebrated works. 

Some of his art is influenced by surrealism, and he often plays with human perception. This is probably due to his personal philosophy, according to which perspective is everything – it’s both a part of the problem and a part of the solution.

UPDATE: sold 📍 Cempazuchitl | The title of my newest painting is the Aztec word for the Mexican marigold, a prominent symbol and decoration for Dia de Los Muertos. The vibrant color and fragrance are believed to guide the spirits to the living world for the annual celebration of the dead. In my painting, my marigold headed conure just landed back in the living world, successfully reuniting the spirits with their living loved ones. Ching’s interest in birds began after he discovered a fascinating bird photography book. He became inspired by the complexity and power of birds. In his paintings of bird portraits, he replaces things that look similar to appreciate nature’s interconnectedness and adaptation.

Ching is impressed by the symbiosis found in nature as a natural phenomenon and as a metaphor.

Something I love about well curated group shows is getting a prompt to think about a theme, which strays from my normal realms of thought, and respond to it. The theme of the show this piece was made for is Ritual, curated by Danijela Krha, the Editor-in-Chief of @beautifulbizarremagazine and showing TONIGHT @havengallery. It’s called Pono and is about the modern practice of Ho’oponopono, a ritual of self forgiveness and being right with oneself. It’s kind of a shift in mindset, acknowledging that the problems and perceptions we hold on to is in our mind and a reflection of ourselves. This acknowledges that we have power and that we can decide to cut the chords binding us to that past. Easier said than done! And don’t quote me, I’m not a practitioner of Ho’oponopono, I was just inspired by and resonated with the ideas. ]]> Hate it or love it, it’s hard to stay indifferent to a Mark Ryden piece. His singular style blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art, garnering attention in the 1990s when he ushered a new genre of painting, tagged aptly as “Pop Surrealism.”

Based in Portland, Oregon, his paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, including a career-spanning retrospective “Cámara de las maravillas” at The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo of Málaga, as well as an earlier retrospective “Wondertoonel” at the Frye Museum of Art in Seattle and Pasadena Museum of California Art.

“I’ve often said that it is the diversity of my inspirations that most defines my art,” he told Plastik Magazine. “I look at many things for inspiration. I collect and hoard lots of things and lots of junk. My studio and house is overflowing with stuff. I collect old children’s books, interesting product packages, toys, photographs, medical models, and religious statues.”

“I also have an extensive collection of books on art,” he said. “I love the old masters more that contemporary art, so most of my books are on artist like Ingers, David, Bronzino, and Carpacio with just a few contemporaries like Neo Rauch and Loretta Lux.”

If you visit their website or Instagram page, you’ll be awe-struck by delicate and brave experimental work that escapes realism and pragmatism and freely ventures into the world of ideas, visualizing a world of limitless opportunities for architecture.

“The alternative world of Antireality is characterized by the absence of limitations and standards, it is an experimental space that at time borders between dream and reality. Antireality is a diary of my architectural imaginations and non-materialized ideas aiming to stimulate recipient’s imagination,” says the creator of the works.

One of the most popular designs features an innovative concept for a one-story summerhouse divided into two principal parts: a living space, and a rooftop swimming pool. Others include forest pavilions, tropical villas, futuristic restaurants and epic observatories.

“For me, nature is one of the main sources of inspiration. My design ideas are frequently stimulated not only by intriguing forms created by nature, but also by attempts to embed architectural structures into the natural context”, adds Antireality.

We can only hope that some ambitious engineers begin to take note.

]]> Antireality is a collection of conceptual architectural proposals, often abstract visions of alternative worlds, using brightly colored materials and exquisitely bold forms. If you visit their website or Instagram page, you’ll be awe-struck by delicate and brave experimental work that escapes realism and pragmatism and freely ventures into the world of ideas, visualizing a world of limitless opportunities for architecture.

“The alternative world of Antireality is characterized by the absence of limitations and standards, it is an experimental space that at time borders between dream and reality. Antireality is a diary of my architectural imaginations and non-materialized ideas aiming to stimulate recipient’s imagination,” says the creator of the works.

One of the most popular designs features an innovative concept for a one-story summerhouse divided into two principal parts: a living space, and a rooftop swimming pool. Others include forest pavilions, tropical villas, futuristic restaurants and epic observatories.

“For me, nature is one of the main sources of inspiration. My design ideas are frequently stimulated not only by intriguing forms created by nature, but also by attempts to embed architectural structures into the natural context”, adds Antireality.

We can only hope that some ambitious engineers begin to take note.
