Olga Griesinger’s artwork stands out for all the good reasons. A well-balanced composition of typography and pattern, graphic design and illustration, Griesinger’s work is both sophisticated and cheeky. So it makes perfect sense her illustrations also make for delightful greeting cards.

Originally from Minsk, Belarus, and currently based in San Diego, California, Griesinger works as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. According to Griesinger, it is her formal training in drawing and painting which makes the basis of her design work—proof that digital artwork can still benefit from classical groundwork.

But to get to where she is today, a lot of trial and error was needed as well. “It took me a while to define what my own style would look like,” she noted once in a chat with The Design Kids.

According to Griesinger, the recipe for success lies in the effort being put. “Try everything, stick to what most successfully illustrates your ideas and comes off more naturally to you,” she says.

These days, her style shifts between two opposite poles: a more realistic approach to illustration and a clean-cut, geometric-based approach. “I think it is only natural that after years of practicing both I became a greeting card graphic designer and illustrator,” says Griesinger.

Recent work of hers includes a botanical interpretation of the English alphabet (part of the @36Daysoftype challenge) and some festive greeting cards.

As we enter an ever-digitalized era, things like handwritten notes or the study of calligraphy are seemingly things of the past (seriously, when was the last time you actually wrote someone a letter?). Luckily for us, there are those among us who understand the value of handwriting.

Heather Hardison has made it her profession. A letterer and illustrator, she specializes in sign painting, preserving this all but lost craft. Her commissions include anything from designing a Golden State Warriors poster to painting full-blown murals that highlight the simple beauty of typography.

Born in North Carolina, Hardison graduated from the College of Design at North Carolina State University in 2009, with a degree in Art and Design, but her love of typography (alongside the financial crisis) shaped her career course.

“These days I keep busy with my illustration and sign painting jobs,” Hardison shared in an interview with The Design Kids. “But I’m always looking for ways to bring those skills together.”

According to Hardison, so far, murals and food packaging have been two of her favorite ways to accomplish just that.

Hardison’s work stands out for being both nostalgic and very much contemporary. As such, it provides a unique way of giving a business a feeling of individuality and character. And as traditional signwriting is slowly but surely making a comeback, Hardison’s craft appeals to a growing audience.

Check out some of her work in the gallery below.

3D artist and designer David Milan is all about having a good time. His work — bright, glossy, and playful — is a creative experiment with typography unfolding in front of our very eyes. “I love working and experimenting with colors, textures, shapes, and forms,” he writes on his website. “I’m always looking for new projects.”

Indeed, judging by his portfolio the projects keep on coming, with selected clients including giants like Apple, Huawei, Facebook, Pepsi, and Adobe. His experimentation with type and fonts has also created quite a stir online, amassing more than 135k followers on Instagram alone.

His work, almost entirely digital is made using tablets like Wacom and iPad Pro with some rendering on Photoshop. But Milan admits he still loves the more traditional form of lettering, employing tools like Crayola markers and Tombow brush pens.

“The hardest part of my job is finding a good quote or a word,” he admitted in an interview with Wix. “I could spend hours looking for a good one.” Show him some love by following him on Instagram:

Sometimes, it’s not what you write it’s how you actually write it. Calligraphy enthusiast Lindsey Bugbee will teach you the ins and outs of writing a letter, and with much time on our hands, her tips and tricks couldn’t have come at a better time.

“A passion for art and calligraphy prompted me to start The Postman’s Knock in 2012 as a custom illustration, calligraphy, and graphic design business,” she writes on her website. “I called my business ‘The Postman’s Knock’ because of my love for beautiful snail mail!”

Her first and most important tip: have fun. According to Bugbee, as long as your practice is enjoyable, you’ll continue to hone your skills. “The best advice I can give about learning calligraphy is you have to enjoy your practice,” she further relayed. “Yes, use structured resources like an online course or a worksheet, but also let yourself have fun. As you start to get the hang of how to use a dip pen, take on engaging projects.”

Aside from calligraphy, Bugbee also teaches watercolor illustration. Some of her structured resources include 10 ‘Stuck at Home’ Project Suggestions and The Beginner’s Guide to Modern Calligraphy. Follow her online for more information.

Like many typography artists, Alexis Taïeb’s love for the written word began with graffiti. “I started in graffiti and moved into typography, so I brought that street style and energy into my work in a way that seems to connect with people,” he explained his creative identity in an interview with Creative Bloq. “But of course, I know that I’m not the only person who’s followed this path.”

But graduating from the street and transitioning into the art of typography (which in Taïeb’s case is mostly digital), took time and effort. “I think one thing that helps make my work distinctive and different is that it’s underpinned by a proper understanding of the fundamental principles of typography, which I taught myself,” he notes.

Known online as Tyrsa, Taïeb’s work has attracted over the years some of the biggest names out there, with selected clients including brands like Apple, Netflix, McDonald’s, and Nike, as well as hip hop artist Childish Gambino. He’s also created quite the splash on Instagram, with over 70k followers to date.

But according to Taïeb, his work isn’t just about cool-looking lettering. Rather, his aim is to follow the function of typography in an organized manner, matching each project with the specific client. “My parents were very unhappy with me doing graffiti originally,” he says, “so every day I feel blessed that I can work as a designer and keep creating cool new things.”

Kelli Laderer’s Instagram feed will provide you the positive outlet you need these days. An illustrator and hand-lettering artist, her work is bright, bold, and graphic, often featuring uplifting quotes and mantras without being too preachy about it.

“My experiences and personal journey have been integral to what my art has currently transitioned into,” said Laderer in an interview with Ever Made. Combining her background in graphic design and fine art, Laderer aims to create positive change, by aligning her work with her ethics.

“If you’re here looking for someone to create an uber good brand or an illustration that spreads your message and exemplifies your values, SUPER, that’s what I do best,” reads her website. “I think a burning planet, plastic straws, and social injustices suck,” she adds. “That’s why I choose to work with people like you who believe in a more eco and socially conscious future.”

According to Laderer, she spent years of hard work (and a lot of trial and error) to get to where she is today. But after going to college to learn graphic design, what she calls “the responsible route,” she decided to muster up the courage and take a more scenic route. Her work these days could be categorized as both artsy and approachable. A win-win if you ask us.

Rita Gomes knows how to pack a punch. The Portuguese artist, also known as Wasted Rita, employs a variety of mediums and techniques to deliver her tongue-in-cheek impressions regarding the ups and downs of being human. These include sculpting, installation making, painting, and writing.

But illustration and drawing are at the core of what she does. “It was always my favorite hobby, ever since I can remember,” she recalled in an interview with Behind Punk. “I used to spend my time drawing alone while other kids were playing and having fun. Yep, natural-born weirdo.”

“The name Wasted Rita came up at a time of my life when I realized all the potential and talent I’ve been wasting ’till then,” she adds. “I was also probably, listening to Black Flag. But, no, it has nothing to do with being drunk all the time, I’m sorry. It’s about commitment, hard work and trying to grow as an artist every day.”

Deciding to take her hobby more seriously, she entered Porto’s School of Fine Arts to study Graphic Design. A self-proclaimed agent provocateur, she adds a healthy dose of skepticism to her work, which makes it all the more relatable. Take a look for yourself.

Craig Black’s lettering process begins with jotting down his ideas and creating rough thumbnail sketches. After finding the best direction, he then begins drawing each letterform.

https://www.instagram.com/p/_9jAlcGcj-/

“This is an iterative process that includes several stages of refinement by illustrating, erasing, tracing, rinse, and repeat,” he explained in an interview with Talenthouse. “Once I’ve taken the concept as far as I can by hand, I scan the image and begin the digitization process.”

But, of course, it’s hard to pinpoint where exactly it is during this process that the magic happens. With thousands of followers online and exhibitions in cities such as London, Barcelona, Australia, and Dubai, it’s clear Black knows what he’s doing. A graphic designer, lettering artist, and typographer, Black says that his strengths lie in his ability to cross disciplines without the restriction of a fixed personal style.

This versatility has offered him the opportunity to work on a varied mix of collaborations with local and international clients of all business backgrounds, with his work being published internationally, in addition to regular features by online media. His work varies not only in style, but also in size and scope, ranging from small packages to massive murals and installations.

But his initial inspiration doesn’t come from the art scene but rather from the soccer field. “I absolutely loved football (soccer) growing up,” he says. “I was so fascinated with the design around the beautiful game such as colorful football shirts, team badges, football boots, and TV commercials and programs. This all contributed to my curiosity in design and made me wonder how things like that were made.”

We can’t wait to see what he’s up to next.

“I have been working with type as a profession for a few years, but I discovered calligraphy when I was in middle school,” he relayed in an interview with We Heart. “Since then, I was always doodling on my notes — and graffiti has continued to be an influence.”

Having studied graphic design in school, sharpened his skills and gave him the opportunity to go to school for typeface design and attend workshops. “Some of the tools I use to create come back to graffiti and how it has influenced me over the years,” he says. “I also like to experiment with the combination of digital and analog; handmade and contemporary.”

Known for his tag, “It’s a living,” his direct approach to typography aims to produce a positive impact. So far, it’s been working out pretty good for him. Take a look for yourself.

Sometimes it’s not about what you write, it’s about how you write it. Linda Yoshida knows best. A full-time graphic designer, she treats calligraphy as a side job – but one she takes very seriously. A member of the Society for Calligraphy in Southern California, Yoshida has studied with master calligraphers and has taken classes and workshops to improve her skills.

“We need to be constantly learning and honing our skills in order for calligraphy to stay relevant, and to keep up with the changing times and client requests,” she explained her philosophy in an interview with The Pen Company. “I firmly believe that to be a good calligrapher, we need to study from the old masters.”

“Many practicing calligraphers are self-taught and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I knew early on that if I was to be serious about the art and craft of calligraphy, I had to learn it the right way, which is from professional calligraphers,” she explains.

Indeed, if nothing else, Yoshida’s Instagram page is a testament to the hard work she puts into her calligraphy practice. “Calligraphy is a life-long learning experience,” she stresses on her personal website. We recommend you follow her learning experience online.
