When artists make portraits of celebrities, they often strive to make them as realistic as possible. San Fernando Valley native RAH Azul is doing the same but with an unusual twist; his artworks are entirely blue.

RAH Azul creates portraits of famous musicians and artists in navy, cobalt, cerulean, lapis, sapphire, and all kinds of shades of blue color. However, his limited palette doesn’t prevent him from making the subjects instantly recognizable.

RAH Azul was born in East Los Angeles to Mexican parents, who migrated to the United States from the region of Jalisco. His Mexican heritage and indigenous roots represent a big part of his creative practice, inspiring him to show the beauty of his culture.

The artist often turns to famous Mexicans as subjects, including painter Frida Calho, actress and singer María Félix, and boxing icon Salvador Sanchez. These works are also adorned with symbols and imagery commonly associated with Mexican culture that adorn the background or, in some cases, the subjects themselves.

If you want to check out more works from RAH Azul, including portraits of late music legends like Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur, and Jimmy Hendrix, check out his social media profiles or continue scrolling.

People press flowers in order to preserve their beauty for longer. But for artist Ant Hamlyn, this practice is much more complex than it seems, as pressing actually destroys flowers in order to conserve them.

Inspired by this complexity, Hamlyn creates intriguing artworks that show the practice of pressing flowers in a different light. They feature inflated flowers, hand-sewn out of different materials, being pressed with a see-through acrylic plate.

It is a captivating sight, as the beauty and the liveliness of the flowers still shine through despite the fact that they are being “suffocated” by the weight of the acrylic plate.

“This idea of desperately trying to preserve and celebrate a moment in time is really interesting to me, particularly in our fast-paced world,” Hamlyn shared in a recent interview with Creative Boom. “As with a flower press, we take a memory and press it before it dies. Forcing it to preserve in time. This combination of memory, nostalgia, and time are fundamental concerns throughout this show and my wider work,”

Hamlyn, who received his MA degree in fine art at Chelsea College of Art, currently works out of his studio in South West London, UK. His works have been exhibited in art galleries and museums across the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and more. Scientific illustrations of animals found in books, encyclopedias, and journals help us learn more about wildlife. They explain the anatomy of animals through colorful drawings and highlight their most important features. Artist Tim Andraka is trying to do the same with his series of illustrations titled “Natural History Collection,” with one distinguishable difference: the science behind his work is made up.

Andraka’s illustrations feature drawings of animals with unexpected and surreal twists. For example, he imagines that Toucans’ big, colorful beaks grow on trees, and the bird simply picks them up once they fall to the ground.

In another illustration, he imagines Armadillo as an opossum who got himself armor.

In a recent chat with Metal Magazine, Andraka shared that there is no specific message he aims to convey with his surreal works, although he does enjoy learning how people interpret them.

“Many of the ideas are just something I thought was weird, unsettling or silly and wanted to share. I also enjoy seeing how different people interpret each piece. Some people resonate with specific animals or objects that carry on a meaning of their own,” Andraka explained.

When we think of street art, we usually imagine murals covering buildings or graffiti sprayed across the entire wall that immediately capture the attention. However, not all street artists want their works to be easily noticeable. For example, British street artist JPS sometimes likes to hide his artworks in plain sight.

Aside from his large-scale pieces, JPS also creates small street artworks, which he calls “mini pieces.” They are strategically placed in the urban environment, sometimes interacting with their surroundings in an amusing way.

JPS often uses pop culture as inspiration for his mini-pieces. This includes scenes from movies like Pulp Fiction and RoboCop and works inspired by video games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat.

JPS creates his mini artworks using stencils and spray paint, with each one being the size of a regular lighter. According to the artist, the process is more demanding compared to large-scale art since it requires multiple layers and great precision. However, he still manages to pack a great amount of detail, making each mini-piece a hidden treasure for anyone who accidentally discovers it.

JPS has planted these intriguing mini pieces across his hometown of Bristol, UK, and in various other cities in Europe and the United States. But considering they might be hard to spot for most people, he also happily shares them on his social media. Check out more of them below.

When we think of traditional sculpture, we usually imagine busts from ancient Rome or works by Renaissance artists like Michelangelo. Well, French sculptor, Leo Caillard is on a mission to change your perception of traditional sculpture by combining it with hipster culture in his intriguing marble pieces.

Since the early 2010s, Caillard has been creating impressive marble sculptures that represent an unusual blend of past and present. While the sculptures are made in the Greco-Roman style, they don’t have features that fit the period. Instead, the subjects are donning long beards, sunglasses, and scarves, visually embracing the hipster culture.

The influence of hipster culture on Caillard’s works is visible in his several projects, including Hipster in Stone and Hipster Sculptures. The former included dressing the sculptures, including works of classical artists, into fashionable clothes. The latter sees Caillard creating busts in bronze that capture the hipster look in the most unusual ways.

“In order to imagine a new society, richer in meaning and beauty, it is essential to look to our Greco-Roman roots for new inspiration,” Caillard explains.

Caillard had solo exhibits across France while also being part of group exhibits in museums in Belgium, Switzerland, and the United States. He also frequently shares his newest creations on Instagram. Check out more of them below.

There is something charming and appealing about Korean convenience stores. They are set up to look inviting, and their storefronts are usually filled with all sorts of eye-catching details that you can’t help but be intrigued about.

Artist Me Kyeoung Lee has spent most of the past two decades capturing the vibe of Korean convenience stores in her drawings. Made with colored pens, these drawings show the stores in their full beauty and serve as an invitation for the viewer to visit them and enjoy their aesthetics in person.

Most of the convenience stores shown in Lee’s drawings are actual places she encountered during her travels throughout the country. She hopes that her art will help people appreciate them more, considering that the number of these stores is on the decline due to the increasing presence of store chains and modern establishments that are taking their place.

“So it became not important for me that the place where the store located, what the store is selling, the time when the store is going to be removed, or whether the store is monumental or not,” she shares on her website. “The small store which I draw only keeps warmness inside of my heart without holding bleak air or damp moisture, even if it is raining or snowing, or darkness is coming.”

The only thing you can do with a broken plate is throw it in the trash, right? Well, in his intriguing series Fragmented, artist Rob Strati shows that some broken plates can be given a new life in the form of artwork.

In Fragmented, Strati creates captivating scenes that are partially shown on the plate and partially drawn on paper with ink. The artist builds on the image shown on the plate, imagining the expansion of the story it tells.

According to Strati, he started with this unique project after a kitchen accident that saw his late mother-in-law’s plate getting broken. Due to the sentimental value of the plate, the family didn’t want to throw it away, so it remained on the kitchen island for a few months.

Seeing the plate every day, Strati started thinking about the stories that happened beyond the scenes shown on the plate. He decided to take it to his studio, at which point an idea of Fragmented started coming to life.

“One day, I picked up a pen and started working on “Fragmented,” exploring the possibilities of things broken and the stories that can evolve from them,” he shared in an interview with deMilked.

Since then, Strati has created a number of Fragmented artworks, using plates he received from friends and fans of his works. He shares the newest pieces on his social media while also exhibiting them in art galleries. Check out more of them below.

With LEGO, the limits of creativity seem endless. Using the little plastic bricks, you can build castles, spaceships, cars, and, somewhat surprisingly, iconic artworks.

LEGO recently presented a new entry to its LEGO Art series, which allows users to recreate Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The set, which comes at a price of $99.99, consists of 1810 pieces and is envisioned as an immersive building project. When you purchase the set, you’ll get access to a soundtrack that includes interviews and stories about the artist and the artwork.

“This is a joyful and creative project for art lovers to produce their own unique dimensional piece of art,” says LEGO in the product description. “Finish the artwork with a decorative tile featuring Hokusai’s signature before you proudly display it on your wall at home or at the office.”

Hokusai created The Great Wave as a woodblock print in 1831 as part of a larger series titled Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. It is estimated that 1,000 prints were created upon the creation of the artwork, with the final number hovering around 8,000 copies. However, only around 100 survived to date.

LEGO Art series kicked off in 2020 with the set inspired by Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych painting. Several other sets followed, including those dedicated to The Beatles, Star Wars, and Harry Potter.

Zena Holloway has a vision of the future where the material world “is grown, not made.“ But instead of waiting to see whether that future will materialize, she is trying to bring it to life today.

Holloway, a respected name in underwater photography, grows clothes and sculpture-like objects out of grass roots. She is considered a pioneer in this field, and her techniques and methods are laying the groundwork for sustainable fashion and art.

According to Holloway, she got the idea to use grass roots as a material while exploring solutions that would help solve the problem of plastic pollution. While doing some research at her local river, she noticed that the roots of a willow tree look similar to textiles. At that point, a thought crossed her mind: “What if we could grow clothes from seed?”

Holloway started working on bringing her idea to life and has managed to do so quite efficiently. She grows wheatgrass into beeswax templates, creating pieces of clothing, accessories, and sculptures out of grass roots. The final results are quite impressive and indicate that Holloway’s idea of sustainable fashion could actually be possible.
