Mark Oliver is an accomplished artist who won various notable awards for his paintings and illustrations. But today, we would like to introduce you to his intriguing side-project titled “The Litter Bugs”.

As part of The Litter Bugs project, Oliver uses found objects and materials to craft all sorts of colorful insects. This includes repurposing metal brooches into beetles, crafting flies out of baits and playing cards, and making bugs out of cricket balls.

“The Litter Bugs are a postmodern exploration and re-working of Victorian insect collections and taxonomy,” Oliver shares on his website.

According to the artist, the primary goal of his found-material bugs is to encourage viewers to give each insect a “closer inspection” and discover all of the things that were used to make them. Sometimes it’s obvious but other times, you really need to look hard.

“I use collage and assemblagé of found and crafted objects to create an artistic illusion, one I hope will seduce the viewer into closer inspection of each bug,” he explains.

Oliver’s The Litter Bugs have been exhibited in various international art galleries and featured in museum exhibitions. The artist also regularly shares his newest works on social media. Continue scrolling to check out more of them below.

People have different ways to chronicle the passing of time. Some opt to write in journals, others make video diaries, and textile artist Karen Turner sews.

Turner is keeping a stitch journal, which sees her sewing an image on a piece of cloth. The fabric is divided into squares and circles, which represent days in a year. The artist then fills out the spaces each day and ends up with a colorful and diverse piece of artwork at the end of the year.

Turner usually doesn’t know what kind of image will fill out the square until she takes her needle and threads. Most of the time, it is completely intuitive and a result of a momentary inspiration.

“I’m not trying to make a beautiful thing; I’m trying to make an honest record of time passing,” the artist explains on her website. “Occasionally, if something wonderful is happening in the garden (for instance, one of my favorite plants is flowering), then I might stitch an approximate pictogram that represents it. Mostly the blocks are abstract shapes and lines, which I find more meaningful.”

Turner made her first stitch journal in 2022 and liked the practice so much that she is currently working on one for 2023. The artist is also offering courses and advice for people who want to try this unique project by themselves.

Repairing watches requires a great deal of patience and attention to detail. This is why it isn’t surprising to see watchmakers like Hisashi Ito, venturing into art.

Ito is the owner of a store in Tosu, Japan, which specializes in watches and eyewear. After he finishes working with clients and repairing watches, Ito proceeds to focus on his hobby: making metal animal sculptures.

In his line of business, Ito often ends up with all sorts of spare parts that are headed to the trash can. So figuring there must be a way to still make them useful, this talented watchmaker started combining them to craft figurines of insects, reptiles, dogs, cats, and all sorts of other animals.

Being accustomed to working with small pieces, Ito has no trouble recreating the animals with extreme accuracy. Sometimes this requires using hundred individual pieces, but the effort surely pays off when you look at the finished product.

At first, Ito only displayed the sculptures in his shop as decoration and a way to intrigue the customers. However, after receiving countless positive reactions, he is now sharing his works on Instagram, allowing the internet to enjoy these impressive creations. Check out more of them below.

Many athletes chose to remain in sports after finishing their careers. But this wasn’t an option for former baseball player Blake McFarland. After spending so much time surrounded by sport, he wanted to leave that world and focus on his true passion: art.

McFarland spent most of his career as a relief pitcher in the minor leagues, where he played for Dunedin Blue Jays and New Hampshire Fisher Cats, among other teams. His career was abruptly finished in 2018 when he had to say goodbye to baseball due to a severe shoulder injury. However, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Walking away from baseball allowed McFarland to become a full-time artist. He focused on sculpture, creating impressive pieces inspired by nature using various materials. His favorite combination is wood and resin although he occasionally does pieces from rubber as well. The subjects represented in his works are usually animals like whales and bears.

“I love working with new materials and always challenging myself to learn something new,” McFarland explains on his website.

McFarland’s new venture proved to be quite successful as the sculptures he makes became well appreciated among art lovers. His works also attracted attention from several high-profile companies and landed him collaborations with sports teams like NBA’s Golden State Warriors. Check out more of his creations below.

For years, textile artist Amanda Barnes worked many jobs until she discovered her love for needles and thread. The former bartender, web developer, account manager, restaurant, and food critic was born in Wiltshire, a small town based in the UK. However, she spent her childhood in Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the Middle East. But when she got back to her homeland nine years ago, she began following her passion: sewing and creating.

For her British followers, she is best known for her 3D soft sculpture mice. But she likes embroidery more and tries to make it as realistic as possible by adding beads to certain elements of the pieces.

Scrolling through her enchanting Instagram gallery, you’ll notice a bunch of animal portraits done with so much precision. Images of cows, roosters, giraffes, flamingos, chickens, and more, are adorning her social media platform. However, these pieces differ from others thanks to the colorful beads sewn into them.

Although she is currently available for commissions, she experiences a dose of anxiety when doing pet portraits.

“I’ve only done two pet commissions. They make me very anxious because of how personal and important they are to the customer,” she wrote on her Instagram.

She currently lives in Huston, Texas, with her husband. Scroll down and check out some of her work below!

Canadian Patricia Larocque is a talented embroiderer and the creator of ffembroidery. If you browse through her Instagram profile, you will notice that her work is “one-of-a-kind”. Why? Because her inspiration comes from spooky horror stories.

Larocque started embroidering in 2011 when she moved to Berlin. She was creating stuff only for her friends at the time. Then, three years later, she opened her online store, where you can purchase her embroidered art, objects, and bags. She currently lives in Lyon, France.

“The designs tend to stem from my overactive imagination that braids in imagery from horror films and the stranger-then-fiction stories of reality TV,” she explained to It’s Nice That.

The secret behind the name ffembroidery is interesting. “FF” or “famous friends” is from a movie, and it was meant to be for Larocque’s future high school electro-duo band. As it never happened, she decided to stick with the name. That is is how ffembroidery was born.

Her main goal with her business is to create “high-quality products and personal custom accessories that are handmade with the highest attention to detail and craftsmanship.”

“Every day I am constantly learning and improving my skills, and I have big plans for the future of ffembroidery,” the crafter added.

You might have already heard about Kassiopeya Sachenwerkler, a talented artist best-known for making various objects inspired by her fantasy-inspired favorite books, movies, and TV shows. One of her latest creations is a dragon book lamp.

It all started when a colleague of hers asked to make a gift for his friend, a “big fantasy fan and an avid reader.” Sachenwerkler usually creates lamps for herself, but she accepted the commission.

She began the project by printing the book covers on paper and then gluing them to cardboard. Next, she started working on the dragon’s nest using acrylic Easter eggs and a nest formed from aluminum foil. When she was done making the base plate of different heights of Styrodur sheets, she began with the painting.

“But as I want the nest to be glowing, I need it to be transparent. So after drying I once again cover it with foil. The foil serves as a separating layer, because on it I now glue several layers of yellow transparent paper on it,” she said in a statement for Bored Panda.

She finished her project by decorating the dragon eggs and adding LED lamps. She also made two baby dragons who had already hatched.

Check out the gallery below to see her brilliant work.

There’s something undeniably satisfying about intricate needlework, and if this needlework happens to be gratifying in terms of color choices—all the better. “The act of hand stitching is still very traditional and loaded with meaning,” says textile artist Zoe Gilbertson. Situated at a crossroad between traditional pastimes and modern artwork, her embroidery work is well balanced: an exploration of geometry and color.

“Visually I want to create something modern and relevant to contemporary art today and the digital references are formed through the design of the artwork,” relayed Gilbertson in an interview with Venison Magazine. Indeed, her color composition might remind you of a digital, pixelized modern artwork.

Her work includes color studies of gradients moving through shades and single color studies and exploration of fades, gradients, and geometry. Seen from a distance, you might not realize the intricate stitching that goes into each piece.

“Sometimes I plan out a work in advance digitally and intricately,” explains Gilbertson. Other times, she’ll “stitch straight onto the canvas with only a vague plan in mind.” Her materials are also a mix of the traditional and the more contemporary and include wool, spraypaint, and tapestry canvas.
