Insects are the biggest and most diverse group of organisms in the world. We sometimes forget that they even exist since they are so little, but for Japanese artist Noriyuki Saitoh, they are the main source of inspiration. He creates insect sculptures using bamboo and we just can’t look away from them!

What’s even more impressive is that they look very realistic, even matching the real-life size ones. Big or small, all kinds of insects are a part of his growing portfolio. The artist starts by creating the skeleton and adds the details with translucent craft paper. The result is incredible, looking like real wings that reflect light.

Saitoh doesn’t exactly try to get every detail perfect: “Since we are not making specimens or replicas, we prioritize the impression, characteristics, and sensation of appearance rather than rigorously measuring the dimensions and creating proportions accurately,” his website reads.

He enjoys leaving some room for imagination, so that the people seeing his art can fill the gaps themselves. He also believes that “it does not make much sense to create details that cannot be discerned by the human eye,” since his goal is for people to see his work in person.

What makes an artist truly an artist? Is it the ability to draw skillfully, between the lines, exactly as the teacher taught? Is it practicing hours and hours on end, for years and years straight? From a technical standpoint, yes—it’s crucial for an artist to have the foundational skills to back up his or her vision. But, friends, being an artist is about so much more than just that.

Austin Howlett, a man with nearly 77,000 followers on Instagram, is the perfect example of a true artist. Beyond his obvious technical skillset, the young man has a vision for what he wants his art to say. A surrealist painter by trade, his art sends messages that are warming to the soul. It’s not hard to see why so many people are falling in love with his works!

What can one gather from a work of art that depicts a giant lying down gracefully amongst mountains? Is it perhaps to say that we are all, in fact, giants in disguise? Giants in heart, giants in soul, giants in spirit? This is but one interpretation and the beauty is that it’s open for anyone to interpret it as they see fit.

If you scroll through Howlett’s page and find yourself getting inspired by his work, why not give him a follow? A little extra inspiration each day never hurts a soul!

Gary Taxali’s artwork doesn’t shy away from the past. Rather, it embraces it wholeheartedly. A fan of all things retro, his work is in constant dialogue with the design and iconography of the 1930s, leaning on the visual language of vintage comics, pop culture, and period advertisements as he touches upon contemporary issues. A blend of past and present is always at play with Taxali, who often includes political commentary through his art.

Taxali’s fascination with the past is also apparent through his choice of materials. A mixed-media artist, his mediums are varied and include paintings, illustrations, and sculptures. “I have a couple of different rules when I work,” he further explained in an interview with Cool Hunting. “One of them is that I don’t really like to work on anything white—like a blank canvas or a fresh piece of paper. I think it’s very scary and intimidating.”

Working with the material rather than against it, Taxali is informed by the paper’s texture and color when beginning his piece. “I might do a drawing on a little piece of paper—a scrap paper from my studio—then I’ll think of where it’s going to end up,” he explains. Other times, he might use wood as his canvas. “I might pick up a wood panel or an aged piece of paper and I think of that as most of the picture being already done, and then I think of the character or drawing as finishing it. After that I might then add a word.”

Showcased at both public and private galleries and museums, over the years Taxali’s artwork has also been featured in top-tier magazines, publications, books, and public installations in the art. He also doesn’t dismiss commercial work and has collaborated with brands like MTV, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and Coca-Cola. His work also includes wooden toys, comics-inspired pieces, and merchandise.

A master of invention, being inspired by the past doesn’t mean his work isn’t original or unique. “The ideas are an extension of my work; I don’t do other people’s ideas,” stresses Taxali.

Eliza Williams, the creative artist behind Doolittle Illustrations, creates vibrant art in collaboration with big and small brands and independent work when she has extra time. She calls herself a “creator of things” as she combines different disciplines like illustration, drawing, and painting. She’s still young, but she’s on a path to become a well-known artist as she already has a lot of attention.

Williams works with clients like Spotify, and one look at her work is enough to see why they are choosing her. She first took up illustration when she was a kid. In 2017, she started sharing her work with the world as she was attending a communications design course at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. “Creating my own illustrative worlds has always been exciting to me, they’re like little worlds to escape to,” she tells It’s Nice That.

Once she decided to put herself out a bit more, her art gained a lot of attention from relevant sources, bringing her more work. “It’s all resulted in me now doing what I love as a career, and I’m so thankful for all the support I’ve received from people and other creatives along the way,” she notes.

Chicago-based artist Ben Houtkamp uses colorful stained glass to make gorgeous art inspired by video games and other pop culture elements. His work is a fresh version of a traditional craft that’s been popular for many centuries. He took up the craft from his family.

Houtkamp took up stained glass art recently despite it being common in his family. Growing up in Rockford, Illinois, he watched his father Frank work with stained glass for years. “I grew up watching him work and hanging out at his studio,” he tells Creative Boom. “I’ve always been an artist but I didn’t really consider working with glass until 2019. My dad taught me thoroughly even though I lack his masterful patience.”

He explains that the process is simple but perfecting the technical details can get difficult. The details make all the difference when it comes to the final result, and his father taught him to be patient and thoughtful with every piece.

The artist is mostly inspired by childhood nostalgia that comes as memories of coloring books, video games, candy, Pokemon cards, Happy Meal toys, and more. Find more of his work on his Instagram account with almost 13k followers. Scroll down to see our favorites.

Ichijo Hikaru is a Japanese illustrator whose work is different from anything else you’ll see. She uses Ben-Day dots and bold colors to emphasize subjects she represents without faces. She includes every race and body type, showing how beautiful diversity can be, which is rarely seen in the Japanese art scene.

“I originally wanted to be a graphic designer, so I did some design work at first,” Hikaru tells It’s Nice That. “But during the course of my work, I realized that I was more interested in the illustrations used on posters and packages than in the designs themselves, so I started illustrating.”

The influence of her graphic design background can be seen in her work, but her ability to replicate printing techniques in digital tools absolutely steals the show.

The artist has recently started exploring ceramics too, just as a way to relax. It’s her way to get away from the screens and create something three-dimensional in the real world.

Her plans for the future include creating more creative and overall better advertisement illustrations and continuing to grow her social media following. Scroll down to see some of her recent work.

Sara Hagale’s illustration style is minimalistic, and yet she manages to say everything she wants with it. Less is often more, and that’s exactly what her art proves. We didn’t need much to fall in love, so check out for yourself below.

Hagale uses simple tools—a piece of off-white paper and a pencil to create fascinating illustrations. She uses a lot of white (or in her case, off-white) space for better effect. It feels like her illustrations can breathe which makes them very refreshing.

There are three reasons why she chose this style. Her graphic design education background is one of them. In graphic design, according to her, “the message is everything and anything that gets in the way of that may as well not be there,” she tells It’s Nice That. The second reason is personal, and it’s that she finds this kind of style calming to draw. The third reason is what she hopes to achieve with the viewer. She wants the people seeing her art to be able to focus on one thing completely.

Her Instagram page currently has almost 500,000 followers and we recommend you check it out if you want to see more of her work. In the meantime, see some of our favorites below.

Carlo Amen is a talented tattoo artist who creates amazing effects with limited colors and shapes. With only a few colors and several carefully placed lines, he achieves what many can only hope for—creating recognizable work in his own unique style. His main inspiration comes from people and nature, so most of his works feature faces, bodies, or elements from nature. Of course, he also fulfills his clients’ wishes, but always stays true to his style.

Amen comes from a small French village, from an artistic family that encouraged his creativity from when he was a kid. Before he decided on living in Paris, he traveled for years and explored his artistic style. Today, he’s a co-owner of the tattoo studio called Les Maux Bleus. “Located in the heart of Paris, the studio is hidden at the back of a courtyard, under a glass roof which is a source of light and inspiration for the artists,” we read on the official website.

Make sure to check out his Instagram account where he currently has almost 60,000 followers. He posts photos of tattoos he did and it’s hard not to want one for yourself! You can see some of our favorite picks below.
