Magic is close at hand. For Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker all it takes is some paper, scissors, and light. The husband and wife artist duo (known as Hari & Deepti), create paper cut shadow boxes that have a dreamlike feel to them.

Their multi-layered artwork is meant to draw the viewer inside within its paper folds. A work of storytelling, as much as work of craftsmanship, each piece can take between 8 to 10 days to complete depending on its size and intricacy. “The idea of using paper as a sculpting medium and forming 3D dioramas is something that is really new,” the paper artists relayed in an interview with ACTFAQs, “but there is a fresh wave of artists trying out paper art.”

We are back! We have been busy working on something interesting over the past 4 months in Taiwan. This image is one of the four installations we created titled "The Journey of Paper". More images to follow soon. The project had it's fair share of problems mainly because of the weather. We had typhoons, torrential rains and if it wasn't raining it was a 100 degrees and humid (95%) which made paper feel like cloth. And then we fell sick and it is never fun to fall sick in a foreign country especially if you don't speak the language. But all this was still worth while because it taught us a lot. We learnt to be patient, humble, resilient and more importantly innovate and adapt to the weather and make work happen. It took us a while but it was a learning for a lifetime. And we couldn't have done it without the help of our friends. Taiwan has the most beautiful friendly humble people we have ever met (Ireland, you got competition ❤) and we were so lucky to have some amazing people around us through our time in Taiwan. We will miss all of you and we look forward to our next trip. Thank you for all the love! PS. A special shout out to our curator Hsinchun, our friend & host Max and the beautiful staff at Sugarbistro and our crew 🙏🙌❤ #pingtung #harianddeepti #journeyofpaper #paperart #handcut #handmade #taiwan #taiwanart #installationart #paperlove #instaart #paperisalive #paperandlight

“Our art is a collaborative process,” they further explained, “so it might be something we come across during our travel or something we imagine. We then sketch it out and hand-cut these intricate layers. The next phase is putting the layers together, depending on how it interacts with light, making some last-minute tweaks. This is the most crucial part of our work.”

Based in Mumbai, you can see Hari & Deepti’s work online, through their buzzing Instagram page, or in exhibitions around the world. “We have worked and developed this style which is very unique,” they stress. “We are still pushing ourselves within this art form to tell these stories in a better way.”

There’s nothing like paper art to remind you of the tangible quality of everyday life. Aline Houdé-Diebolt knows best. A freelance paper designer and set designer, Houdé-Diebolt makes elaborate props and complete paper sets of paper.

Inspired by the world around her, Houdé-Diebolt translates the banalities of the day to day into works of magic. Under her skillful hands, the colorful pieces of paper transform into objects that include headphones, mugs, toy trains and even a vintage rotary telephone.

Based in Paris, Houdé-Diebolt actually started out as a textile designer, having graduated from the École Supérieure d’Arts Appliqués Duperré in 2007. “When I decided to become a freelancer, I started by creating textile patterns for a few brands,” she recalled in an interview with Strictly Paper. “But that didn’t fit my need. I needed to craft things. To manipulate and touch materials and colors. That’s how I came to paper.”

“Colors, patterns, and materials are a real passion to me,” adds the French designer. “It always has been this way. I also learned the Traditional Chinese paper technique in a design institute in China.”

Her Instagram page is an endless source of inspiration and color. Scroll down to see some of her selected work:

Michael Velliquette is an American artist who takes paper art to a whole new level. Instead of replicating swans or roses, Velliquette is creating elaborate sculptures and architectural designs that are so impressive that you’ll have a hard time believing they are made out of paper.

Despite being made out of delicate material, Velliquette’s creations display a surprising level of durability and stability. Case in point below.

“Paper comes in endless forms,” the artist told Colosall in a recent chat. “It can be used in multiple dimensions. It is easy to handle and manipulate, and it is available anywhere. It is inherently ephemeral, but given the right conditions, it can last for centuries.”

Stacey Elaine’s artwork sits at a crossroads between paper art and illustration. Each piece is made by layers of tissue paper (the kind used as gift wrap), that are hand-cut carefully and then gently applied onto heavy hot press watercolor paper.

A mother of two young sons, Elaine admits that she tends to her art during her kids’ naps. Each piece can take anything between a few hours to a few days to complete. “I often have only a vague idea of what I want to make when I get to work,” she notes on her website adding that sometimes the end result is vastly different from what she originally had in mind.

“My love of animals and color is unabashedly on display in my pieces, and I hope they bring you as much joy when you view them as it brings me to create them,” she writes. Indeed, her work reflects her love for the patterns and shapes found in nature. Tigers, monkeys, and snakes are all to be expected, alongside paper-cut plants, colored in black, pink, and blue.

“I’m drawn to the bold contrast between the saturated colors of the tissue paper and the bright white background upon which they are adhered,” says Elaine. Take a look at some of her work in the gallery below and share with us your favorites.

Polly Verity is a gift paper sculptor who creates remarkable artworks using only her hands. She comes from an artistic family and her talent started to show at a very young age; she was only eight when she began folding sheets.

“I tried to fold along the profile of a face, and I realized that I could tweak the paper on either side just very slightly and ease curves out to give volume and form. When I tried the same technique in watercolor paper, I suddenly had micro-control over the resulting curved forms and they became soft and sensual. So each face goes on to inform the next and they have become a sort of series,” the artist told Colossal and added that her artworks have been exhibited in galleries worldwide.

She is also on social media, where she regularly posts images of her creations. You can find her on Instagram where she has attracted more than 29,000 followings.

Books are meant for reading, that much is clear. But sometimes, they can also provide great art materials. Case in point: Todd Watts’ book series. An homage to his favorite books, his paper sculptures hint at the books’ subjects and themes.

“The entire project is representing the power of reading,” he told A’ Design Award and Competition’s blog. “I wanted to challenge myself with a passion project using paper craft to elevate my favorite stories into surreal and imaginative works of art,” he explained the thought process behind his viral series. “I wanted to create a conversation and a guessing game between the viewer of the art and the books they represented.”

According to Watts, in a digital world it’s becoming harder to dedicate time to the classic paperback but reading from screens makes us read slower, learn less deeply, remember less, and sleep worse. “This is why students prefer to print out their electronic textbooks,” he says. “This is ‘The Power of the Paperback’.”

Which, of course, makes his day job all the more ironic. A multidisciplinary communication designer, Watts specializes in brand activation, promotional material, digital content, and conceptual development for brands and film or TV projects.

Take a look at some of his book sculptures in the gallery below.

Diana Beltran Herrera’s paper art takes after flora and fauna. Meant at bridging the gap between people and their natural surroundings, her creations include paper birds, butterflies, and fruit. Though fragile, her paper sculptures also repel against time – presented as frozen, ideal specimen.

With a BA in Industrial Design from the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University and an MA in Fine Arts from UWE, Herrera’s studies included researching different materials. According to her website, her interest in economic materials in general, is based on their potential of transformation, using the simplest of techniques.

“When I started to work with paper, I was developing very structural elements,” she told My Modern Met. “I used to have a lot of strips of paper that I used to cut and glue to form a volume.” Much like patterns found in nature, her sculptures comprehend massive groups of elements that together compose a major complex system.

According to Herrera, there’s inherent flexibility with paper. “I spend a lot of hours collecting images of the subject in different positions, then I do some reading to find the right measurements,” she explains. Her finished products are exhibited in solo and group shows around the world. But you can also follow her online, via Instagram.

Here on MobiSpirit, we’ve featured a fair share of paper artists, incorporating techniques that include anything from paper quilling to papercutting. But even amongst these selected talents, Patrick Cabral stands out. Based in the Philippines, Cabral uses papercutting to carve portraits of endangered animals.

His Endangered Species series is supported by the philanthropic organization Acts of Kindness, and is also in partnership with World Wildlife Fund Philippines, with the aim to educate the public about the plight of at-risk animals. According to Cabral, a portion of the sales from this collection has gone towards supporting nature preservation in the Philippines.

But what is even more incredible, is that Cabral doesn’t limit himself to only paper. A multi-disciplinary artist through and through, his talents include calligraphy, sculpting, web designing, and even app development. His creative career actually began with web developing and animating, having worked for corporate branding and digital advertising, as well as fashion websites.

According to his personal website, he first found his artistic voice when he was only 11-years-old and when he took an odd job of writing the names of graduating students’ high school diplomas. Who would’ve imagined this would only be the beginning of an incredibly fruitful career?

Full extent of the wall of my artworks at @starbucksreserve SM North Towers commissioned by @starbucksph . I worked with the Starbucks Asia Pacific team in Hong Kong on this project. I was quite nervous when they first got in touch with me because I was scared of the horrors of shipping huge artwork abroad, what more if it's 3 huge art pieces. I didn't really ask where it would be located at first because I wasn't even sure if it's going to push through because I already had around 3 project which has almost the same specification as this project that failed to materialize, one is even for a huge fashion house which until now I am still hoping to push through 🙂 . I felt a little confident when they sent me the blueprint and I saw that it's going to be in a new branch of Starbucks Reserve here in Manila. I think a lot of people assume that it's so easy for my projects to get funded now because it is being featured on a lot places. A lot of people doesn't even know that I am based in Manila, where you don't really have a lot of resources for projects like this. I have talked to a lot of recognized local designers this year and it seems that everyone always have to improvise in order for them to achieve their goals. We don't really have access to a lot of high end equipments here and a lot still has to do manual labor for something that can be easily achieved by technology. Sometimes it can get really frustrating because we are all equal citizens of the world, and only few has an access to best tools that the world can offer. Every time I do projects like this, I always aim to over-deliver, because I am not sure if there's going to be another project like this, and if this is going to be the last, may this be the best that I can ever create, regardless of my circumstances.

Victoria Bee has always known she’d grow up to have a creative career, but it was only after years in the industry that she stumbled upon her weapon of choice—paper. “After making some 2D paper-cut illustrations for myself and some friends, a guy in Brussels asked me to build some paper bird-head masks for his art project,” she told Sixtysix Magazine. “I had a good vision for size and volume. It worked out really well, and I got a lot of positive feedback.”

And so, after five years of graphic design studies, and four years working as a junior art director, during which she moved around quite a bit, hopping back and forth between Montreal, Paris, and London, Bee decided to take a leap of faith into paper art. Now based in Berlin, she runs her own creative studio alongside other fashion designers and illustrators.

A paper prop maker, among other things, her creations include paper food, animals, and objects, ranging from the miniature to room-sized sculptures. And much like her creations, Bee’s inspiration consists mainly of paper.

“I have a box full of sketchbooks, lonely sheets of paper, Post-its, napkins… all waiting to be presented and used,” she said, noting the paper items in her possession. “I also keep all the sketches from previous projects. They’re not useful anymore, but I have fondness for them. I can recall the time I discussed that idea with someone and scribbled out the project. It’s not just a napkin anymore; it’s a real memory!”

We highly recommend you follow her on Instagram.
