According to illustrator and designer, Dinara Mirtalipova, art communicates emotions. “It can tell stories and paint a mood,” she reflected once in an interview with the Sak. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and currently based in Ohio, Mirtalipova has come to be recognized for her distinct style of illustration. Describing herself as a folklorist, her folk-inspired illustrations feature a heavy dose of flowers, animals, and hand lettering.

“I feel my art has a sense of nostalgia,” says Mirtalipova, “it’s folkloric and musical. When I paint my stories, I like them to communicate positive energy, to be bright and colorful, to bring joy and to spread joy.” Though she works from her home studio in snowy Sagamore Hills, Uzbek and Russian folklore serve a constant source of inspiration.

Surprisingly, Mirtalipova studied first Computer Science, before following her passion and transitioning into a career in the arts. Completely self-taught in illustration and design, her creative process includes carving lino blocks and painting with gouache and acrylics.

“Only after I grew up and graduated from the field of computer science, I realized I couldn’t stop painting,” she explains. “To my surprise, I began receiving commissions to draw and design for people and companies. And after my client list grew I decided it was time to concentrate on art professionally.”

The weather is nice and staying home is hard. We get it. But thanks to Jess Phoenix, you can enjoy spring throughout the entire year. Based in Seattle, the illustrator and surface designer specializes in florals and vibrant, almost neon, colors. Her designs, eye-popping to say the least, can be found on anything from stationery and book covers to embroidery and ceramics.

“My work emerged from a desire to produce art as bright and as vibrant as I wanted,” explained Phoenix in an interview with Papirmass. “I love my day job, but sometimes I’m told to change my colors so they ‘don’t vibrate so much.’ I WANT my art to vibrate!”

Funnily enough, her choice to illustrate mainly, if not exclusively, flowers is a practical one. “I choose to paint flowers simply because they are an excellent vehicle for exploring color,” she says. According to Phoenix, most of the flowers and leaves are imagined and as such, provide a vehicle for her vibrant color stories.

“I’m curious about color,” she admits, “which makes me want to explore it and ‘get creative’ with it. Everyone has something they’re curious about, so I think everyone has that innate potential to explore that curiosity and in turn, be creative.”

Based in Leicester, Hall is known for her natural themed illustrations, with a special interest in flowers. Describing her work as delicate, quirky, and humorous, her work will add some lightness to your feed. There are also a lot of patterns.

Incorporating loose line work with loose watercolor illustrations, Hall’s work can be found on anything from cards and prints to ceramics. “I enjoy having a handmade element into my work,” she shared with Jung Katz, “for example incorporating stitch into digital prints and binding my notebooks using my sewing machine, it makes it a little bit more me.”

And although her work zooms in on the natural world, she’s also interested in the meeting place between nature and people. “I am a keen observer so people watching is how I get most of my inspiration,” says Hall. “People surprise me everyday so a lot of the time peoples’ actions, conversations and their dress sense also inspire me. I also take inspiration from nature, the seaside and fashion.”

“I like to think I create work that people can relate to,” she concludes.

“Breath in, breath out,” invites one illustration by Katie Wilson. Written in bold type, the words are enclosed by flowers and butterflies. These and other reminders are to be expected in Wilson’s Instagram page, a parallel universe filled with critters and flowers, and frankly, a place we’d like to visit in our mind these hectic days.

Working from an old railway house in a small town in Coastal Otago, New Zealand, Wilson says she finds inspiration in nature. This includes her garden, the landscape around her, and her long nature rambles in the surrounding countryside.

Informed by her careful observations, her illustrations focus on the simple, sweet and cozy things in life, creating a warm environment where anyone and everyone is invited. “I think I’ve always drawn and painted,” reflected Wilson in an interview with AWW Magazine. “My mum was always making things so I’m sure it was her influence that made me start drawing.”

“I’ve always loved animals and have always either had dogs or cats or horses or chickens in my life,” she further relayed. “I try to simplify the shapes and textures of the animal whilst still keeping it recognizable. I also try to show its personality through facial features and gestures.”

Her work is featured on a variety of products, anything from stationery and children’s books to toys and clothing. But you can also admire it by simply following her Instagram page.

Alexandra Karamallis describes herself as “a very whatever I feel inspired to do is what I will do kind of a creative person.” Which is meant to say she does it all, and with creative abundance. Her work includes watercolor gouache painting and collage making, as well as sweater knitting.

“I love knitting and painting, but I go through phases with both of them,” she shared in an interview with Matter of Hand. “I will really focus on painting for four or five months and then, often in the fall, I’ll start to feel like I want to knit a sweater.”

Based in New York, she works as a painter and textile designer with the aim to make art that is at once thought-provoking and joyful. Nature is a recurring theme throughout her work, and specifically gardens. Through the juxtaposition of nature with architecture, she aims to draw attention to the beauty in diversity.

Her creative process includes a lot of research beforehand, which includes an exploration of colors and compositions. “Typically in the front end of the process I do the research and take notes, then I come to a decision more or less about what I want the content of the painting to be,” shared Karamallis. After her visual research, she sits down and paints. “I try to look at the whole thing throughout the process,” she adds. “I think that a lot of painters do that to create a larger, cohesive composition.”

When it comes to illustration, there’s nothing we admire more than clever use of patterns and textures. Minnesota-based designer, Zoe Wodarz, has just the thing we need. Bold, colorful, and minimalistic, her digital illustrations have a textured, hand-made feel to them, with her patterns being playful while still maintaining a level of sophistication.

A self-taught graphic designer and digital illustrator, Wodarz combined her learned computer skills with her background in fine arts, to launch her design career. “I love to combine different media to create new techniques and stretch my skills!” she told the BoomBoom Prints blog.

Her work includes trend research, surface design, and product line development, on top of pattern design and illustration. She has also licensed her illustrations to manufacturers for online shops and major retail companies worldwide. Her designs have also been featured in advertising and marketing campaigns for brand social media, editorial, and store merchandising.

“What I love about art is that it is never standing still,” she remarked. “My peers tell me I now have a slight signature style to my work but really I love to produce art and product design on demand,” she went on to say. “It is a special challenge to not rely on a medium or style for your inspiration but to let the world around you dictate the trends!”

Charlotte Jade invites you to bring the beauty of the outside world inside your home, through her hand-drawn patterns, featured on an array of products as well as wallpapers. Based on her love of nature, texture, and pattern, Jade’s business (launched in 2015), celebrates the richness of shapes and forms found in our natural environments.

Her design collections are available on wallpaper, textiles, upholstery fabrics, furniture, cushions, ceramic tiles, and flooring, with all products printed and made in the UK. “I hand draw all my designs, which creates quite a personal feel to my designs,” she noted in an interview with Jung Katz. “I then apply color (which is generally quite bold) and edit these hand-drawn images digitally using photoshop.”

Clearly inspired by the natural world, both flora and fauna, Jade is also very much inspired by fashion and likes incorporating current trends in her work. Her designs are also based around geometric prints, making for a striking juxtaposition between organic and manmade forms.

“My work is quite detailed and I generally use a pencil to create my patterns,” she explains, adding that she does, however, enjoy combining pencil and paint. “I feel these two mediums create quite unique pattern designs,” she says. Scroll down to see some of her patterns in action.

Kate Zaremba’s love for the arts had sparked early on. As a child actress, she grew up on theater sets and sound stages. But it wasn’t until years later, after receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Art Studies from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri, and working with potter and designer Jonathan Adler that she found her true love in interior design.

She now creates stunning wallpapers that upgrade the blandest of settings, adding a pop of color and playfulness to their surroundings. Specializing in wallpapers, textiles, and ceramics, Zaremba works from her two studios in Austin, TX and Washington, DC.

“My focus in art school was textiles, but I’ve always been a paper person,” she explained in an interview with the Urban Outfitters blog. “So as I was learning surface design and weaving I was also creating sculptures and installations out of cut paper. I went on to work for Jonathan Adler who is a master of interiors. The unique and storied objects he creates continue to inspire me. Wallpaper seemed like a melding of my life experiences, I want to make things that enliven a space, that provide creative energy and inspiration for its inhabitants.”

Explaining her artistic process, she explained that: “an idea for a pattern can really pop up out of nowhere or sometimes it’s in a museum looking at works of art or it might come out of playful experimentation in my studio. You can’t force the creative process so I always have multiple things in the works. Some designs take longer than others and some are formed in a momentary sketch.”

Check out some of her bold patterns and designs. Which one would you stick to your wall?

All of her arrangements are shot in her house in New Haven CT, where she keeps a studio. “As far as how I find materials to experiment with, it varies a lot,” she told Colossal. “I generally work with what I can find around the house, inside or out. It begins as a scavenger hunt of sorts, and then a challenge as I begin to build.”

The spectrum of her career has included work in floral design, interior decorating, window design, and prop styling.

Scrolling through Kristen Meyer’s Instagram page is oddly relaxing. The multimedia artist arranges organic materials like rocks, leaves, and vegetables, in geometric shapes that are laid down on pastel backgrounds.

You can see more of Meyer’s work on her Instagram account. She also offers prints of her images on her website.
