]]>Heather Hardison has made it her profession. A letterer and illustrator, she specializes in sign painting, preserving this all but lost craft. Her commissions include anything from designing a Golden State Warriors poster to painting full-blown murals that highlight the simple beauty of typography.
Born in North Carolina, Hardison graduated from the College of Design at North Carolina State University in 2009, with a degree in Art and Design, but her love of typography (alongside the financial crisis) shaped her career course.
“These days I keep busy with my illustration and sign painting jobs,” Hardison shared in an interview with The Design Kids. “But I’m always looking for ways to bring those skills together.”
According to Hardison, so far, murals and food packaging have been two of her favorite ways to accomplish just that.
Hardison’s work stands out for being both nostalgic and very much contemporary. As such, it provides a unique way of giving a business a feeling of individuality and character. And as traditional signwriting is slowly but surely making a comeback, Hardison’s craft appeals to a growing audience.
Check out some of her work in the gallery below.

]]>“It’s time,” reads Bulger’s website. “Time to pick up a pen and write a letter to Nanna. Surprise Facebook friends with a handwritten postcard. Send a thank-you card to your child’s school teacher. Leave a loving post-it note for your partner. No matter what your reason for writing, I will help you make it special and beautiful.”
Indeed, the time to rekindle your relationships with friends is now. And trust us, there’s no better feeling than receiving a carefully written note from a loved one, reminding that you are loved and cared for. “Life today is busier than it has ever been!” observes Bulger. “But I think that is all the more reason why it is so special to slow down enough to write something meaningful, and personal, and show the person you’re writing to how much you care.”
According to Bulger, we all have creative potential within us. Her hope is to give you the confidence, inspiration, and practical tools you need to share your creative work and stories with others. Prepare to be inspired:

]]>“When I create work that encourages or comforts others, it’s because I’m trying to encourage or comfort myself, too,” she explained in an interview with Freelance Wisdom. “Above all, I want to make work that helps others feel less alone.”
A self-taught artist and writer, Lee Patel is driven by the idea that anything is possible, as her journey to self-realization demonstrates clearly. After working for six years at a job that made her miserable, she turned to illustration as an outlet – a hobby which would soon become a full-time job.
Now a full-time illustrator and author, she encourages others to take a leap of faith. “I’m completely self-taught, so a lot of times, the path was a series of trial and error,” she notes. “I felt lonely and isolated often, especially since I’m a bit introverted and found it difficult to immerse myself in a creative community. But I learned an incredible amount about myself.”

]]>“A passion for art and calligraphy prompted me to start The Postman’s Knock in 2012 as a custom illustration, calligraphy, and graphic design business,” she writes on her website. “I called my business ‘The Postman’s Knock’ because of my love for beautiful snail mail!”
Her first and most important tip: have fun. According to Bugbee, as long as your practice is enjoyable, you’ll continue to hone your skills. “The best advice I can give about learning calligraphy is you have to enjoy your practice,” she further relayed. “Yes, use structured resources like an online course or a worksheet, but also let yourself have fun. As you start to get the hang of how to use a dip pen, take on engaging projects.”
Aside from calligraphy, Bugbee also teaches watercolor illustration. Some of her structured resources include 10 ‘Stuck at Home’ Project Suggestions and The Beginner’s Guide to Modern Calligraphy. Follow her online for more information.

]]>Their letterpress and greeting-cards brand Hello!Lucky uses creativity to amplify human kindness, with the aid of tongue in cheek puns and playful illustrations. Aside from their greeting cards, their award-winning design studio produces anything from best-selling children’s books to bedding, ceramics, and even socks.
“We are both very creative and visually minded,” James shared in an interview with Say Yes, where she described the sisters’ division of labor. “I have the design and illustration skills, but Sabrina is also a great art director and has a really good sense of design,” she noted. “Sabrina is, however, way more left brained than I am – she’s good with numbers and strategic planning and that kind of thing.”
Their brand also gives back to the community, so you know your money’s in good hands. Amongst other activities, the sisters have co-founded the non-profit Write_On Campaign with Egg Press, created protest posters for the Women’s March on Washington, and sold cause pins that have raised over $20K for various charities.
But back to the greeting cards.

]]>But graduating from the street and transitioning into the art of typography (which in Taïeb’s case is mostly digital), took time and effort. “I think one thing that helps make my work distinctive and different is that it’s underpinned by a proper understanding of the fundamental principles of typography, which I taught myself,” he notes.
Known online as Tyrsa, Taïeb’s work has attracted over the years some of the biggest names out there, with selected clients including brands like Apple, Netflix, McDonald’s, and Nike, as well as hip hop artist Childish Gambino. He’s also created quite the splash on Instagram, with over 70k followers to date.
But according to Taïeb, his work isn’t just about cool-looking lettering. Rather, his aim is to follow the function of typography in an organized manner, matching each project with the specific client. “My parents were very unhappy with me doing graffiti originally,” he says, “so every day I feel blessed that I can work as a designer and keep creating cool new things.”

]]>“My experiences and personal journey have been integral to what my art has currently transitioned into,” said Laderer in an interview with Ever Made. Combining her background in graphic design and fine art, Laderer aims to create positive change, by aligning her work with her ethics.
“If you’re here looking for someone to create an uber good brand or an illustration that spreads your message and exemplifies your values, SUPER, that’s what I do best,” reads her website. “I think a burning planet, plastic straws, and social injustices suck,” she adds. “That’s why I choose to work with people like you who believe in a more eco and socially conscious future.”
According to Laderer, she spent years of hard work (and a lot of trial and error) to get to where she is today. But after going to college to learn graphic design, what she calls “the responsible route,” she decided to muster up the courage and take a more scenic route. Her work these days could be categorized as both artsy and approachable. A win-win if you ask us.

]]>“This is an iterative process that includes several stages of refinement by illustrating, erasing, tracing, rinse, and repeat,” he explained in an interview with Talenthouse. “Once I’ve taken the concept as far as I can by hand, I scan the image and begin the digitization process.”
But, of course, it’s hard to pinpoint where exactly it is during this process that the magic happens. With thousands of followers online and exhibitions in cities such as London, Barcelona, Australia, and Dubai, it’s clear Black knows what he’s doing. A graphic designer, lettering artist, and typographer, Black says that his strengths lie in his ability to cross disciplines without the restriction of a fixed personal style.
This versatility has offered him the opportunity to work on a varied mix of collaborations with local and international clients of all business backgrounds, with his work being published internationally, in addition to regular features by online media. His work varies not only in style, but also in size and scope, ranging from small packages to massive murals and installations.
But his initial inspiration doesn’t come from the art scene but rather from the soccer field. “I absolutely loved football (soccer) growing up,” he says. “I was so fascinated with the design around the beautiful game such as colorful football shirts, team badges, football boots, and TV commercials and programs. This all contributed to my curiosity in design and made me wonder how things like that were made.”
We can’t wait to see what he’s up to next.

]]>But any stationary admirer knows it’s all in the details. Details like little handmade faux-leather envelope pencil pouches and illustrated tissue paper. Handmade with high-quality materials, such products are keepsakes meant to be cherished.
According to Charlie, though most of our experiences these days are digital, there still use for paper stationery. “I’ve asked a lot of people to recall the last time they sent or received a lovely handwritten letter,” she told the Printed blog. “Hardly anyone could remember. There’s no getting away from the ease of an email, but I really hope that by selling these products I can get as many people as possible taking a little time out of their day to correspond to a friend or loved one with a letter.”
While Charlie is the illustrator and product designer of the operation, Gav is in charge of the artwork set-up, managing print production as well as social media. But the couple also has a cat, Mr. Miaow, who acts as CCEO (Chief Cat Executive Officer).

Some of her more out-there designs include DIY “Save the Date” tipis. “We are having a tipi wedding in the Lake District, so after doing a bit of research and various designs, that’s when the pop-up tipi came to life,” she explained. “I love quirky designs and a lot of color, and I also wanted something that people will remember and have some fun with.”
Our favorite design by her? An Art Deco-styled invitation perfect for a Great Gatsby themed wedding. Step up your wedding game.
